Can I change my oil and keep warranty?

I want to change to synthetic motor oil. Since my car is under warranty and everything, do I have to take it to the dealer for oil changes or is that something I am allowed to do without voiding anything with the warrant? I have always liked Mobil 1 but I see that they don't make the proper weight/viscosity tha the 2003 CLS calls for. Do you guys suggest a synthetic oil to use?

yes you can change your oil to synthetic without voiding your warranty.

and yes you can perform the maintenence on your own

I haven't seen any Moble 0-20 down here yet. That thin stuff makes me nervous but I'm sure M1 would be fine.

well there is a possiblity that you could get your warranty void at certain dealerships

if you ever have motor problems the service department can look into your records to see if all the REQUIRED service has been completed at their department. if not then they ask you for records of maintance like oil change, tranny change, and belts.

the trick is that if you purchase motor oil or parts for your vehicle you MUST keep all reciepts even if you are getting a local shop to do the install or maintance you must have a reciept from them too!

otherwise the service department could possibly not honor any warranty work due to YOUR so called negligence and not servicing the vehicle properly according to the contract in the warranty...

Mobil makes 5w-20 now in the Drive Clean (regular dino oil). If you change your oil every 3750 like the manual says synthetic IMO is not really worth 3x the cost of regular.

And I do all my own maintenance, but you gotta keep a log of it and receipts.

Thanks for the info guys. I plan on running the oversize mobil 1 filter and probably mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30 (or should I go 5w-30) since it's the summer. How many quarts should you put in if you use the oversized filter? Do you prefill the filter as well?

I always check the dipstick after filling it with new oil, and I always put in the recommended 4.6 quarts and its right in the middle of the two dots, which is where its supposed to be. You can technically fit 5 qt's in it and still be within the dots, but there's no need to put in any extra when using the larger Mobil 1 filter.

I'm also running the M1-105 oversized filter, and since the manual calls for 4.6 quarts including oil filter capacity (regular size filter, of course), I usually put in about 4.7-4.8 quarts. Smack dab betwen the lines on the dipstick.

I run 5w30 during the summer and 10W30 during the winter. Changed every 2800-3000 miles.

It's good stuff, Mobil1. At least I think so. But my buddy swears that ever since Mobil1 changed their formula a while back, it's gone to shit. I'm not sure if I should take his word on that. I might try AMSOIL, but if the C5, MB, Porsche, Viper, and various other prodigious car makers call for Mobil1, then it's good enough for Acura.

<<<I run 5w30 during the summer and 10W30 during the winter.>>>

are you sure you're not getting it reversed? I thought you should use lighter oil in winter.

Right at the top dot is definitely OK. I think that's the optimal level.

sidemarker - good point, although fortunately most dealerships are not this strict, reason simply being that just as you must provide 'proof' that you did ALL scheduled maintenance - they must 'disprove' that you didn't, meaning unless you do NOT change oil for like 60-70k miles as believe it or not some less knowledgeble 'folks' do not... then you'd have a real 'mess' on your hands. What dealerships care 'most' about is 'major service' and if you are diligent enough about it... every 30-60-90k - you should be 'ok' with [ext.] warantee repairs - since 7.5/15k isn't 'much' of a service anyway . Fortnately here in SoCal most dealers 'combine' all the stuff you need to do during 45/75k service, so you get your fuilds/antifreeze changed sooner then later... which is always ok by most.

My Grandfather was told by the Lexus dealer that his warrany would be void if he had his oil changed elsewhere. He paid $150 every 3 thousand miles at the dealer for an oil change the entire time he owned that car.

oh man let the flames begin!

i dont think i spend 150 on oil changes in 1 YEAR, and i think some people can go 2 years to spend 150 on an oil change

which lexus dealership is this? i would hate to see what the regular maintance service cost at that place!

just to share, when my mom got her 94 lexus ls 400 the dealership gave her free oil change for the life of the car. my mom has never paid for an oil change for the car and has saved about 900 bucks (according the oil change price at the lexus dealership about 35 bucks and she changes every 4000 miles and she currently has about 120k on the odo)
