Try it...I remember a while back, I raced Nova in my older 540 auto, with A/C on and Traction and he got a better launch and was next to me to about 80 I think...
i've had a short race with a 540. not sure what year it was, 96-98 though...race was to about 70mph...i was ahead but by less than a car length....but he had to get behind me since his lane ended, and that's all that matters
I beat a SC400 and GS400 in one night at the street races. They were both stock. I drive an 2000 Acura TL with Aem Cold Air intake, Aem Tru Power Pullies. I ll tell you this... Its a very close race ( no more than a car distance).
So at this point its all about the driver and the reaction time...
It seem like this guy is the type to just pop it in D5 and race. If thats the case then you are gonnna hand him his ass on a platter.
If he knows how to drive his car ( gateshift + torque brake) then you are gonna have to out drive his aSS!
Pop it into D1 and torque brake. Then when u launch let it rev to the red and then simply shift right ---> to shift into D2. Already you should have about a half a car lead if im correct. Then its all a matter of shifting at the perfect time right before the rev limiter kicks in... D3 is trick because if u push too hard it wil shift into D4 and you will lose much needed rpms....

Who cares if you can beat him or not...give it a shot...the other day I went after a Saleen w/500+HP, i knew i was gonna get my ass handed to me, but who cares..it was enough for me to hear him say damn...that thing is quicker than I thought...just remember one thing...dont talk shit, and if you win just say good race...and if you lose, just say we'll try it again after i get some work done
I raced a M6 540i before when i had my CL-S with headers and catback installed. To be honest with u, it wasnt pretty.... from 0- around 80mph he was already two cars ahead. So since ur friend has Auto 540i i would say race him, but not past 80mph.

If your best 1/4 is 15, the 540 will beat you cause they do 14s in the 1/4. Then again if u get a good launch and he does not you can win. 540 autos have gotten 0-60 in 6-6.4 secs. Manuals 5.6-5.8 seconds.
Check his tires. Not all 540s have 17s, some have 16s, less traction for a good start.
yeah...being that its an auto you should be close...come to think of it I saw a 6speed version run a 13.9 before he started spraying his shit, then he dropped to a 13.0....those things are deceptively fast...good luck and let us know how it turns out
If the 540i gets a good launch it will be pretty close until 50ish. Then the 540i will start walking you hard. The non sport 540's arent geared for drag racing. They come equiped with a 2.81 gear ratio, which isnt good for stop light racing. Up top is where the car really shines.
He's your buddy...what you got to lose? Honestly, if you're running 15 in the quarter then you better practice your launches. I've never seen any 540's, even with idiots driving hit 15....they're usually in the 14's all the time.
Give it a shot, what you got to lose?
Also, the guy with TL with AEM...no headers? Then I highly doubt a GS400 was full out racing you. I speak from experience having owned a 2000 TL with I/H/E/VAFC....then I could beat a GS400 to about 40 then he'd start walking away after 60. Keep in mind, I had every possible mod for a TL then.
