Cai Please Clean Yours!!! Read!!!

JUST LOOKING OUT FOR EVERYONE! I JUST TOOK OFF MY AEM FILTER AND WOW WAS MINE DIRTY AS HELL!!! I'VE ONLY HAD IT ON FOR ABOUT 15,000 MILES!!! I JUST INSTALLED A TORNADO FUEL SAVER INTO MY INTAKE (I KNOW, I KNOW IT DOESN'T WORK BUT JUST IN CASE IT'S ONLY $65) AND AGAIN THE FILTER WAS JUST FILTHY!!! SO IF YOU HAVEN'T CLEANED YOURS IN FOREVER, TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT. YOUR ENGINE WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT

Thanks for the tip, now take that silly toy off your intake before it falls apart and ends up INSIDE your engine.

PS… I clean mine every 10,000 miles or so.

AEM suggested that I clean it whenever I got an oil change so figure about every 3500 miles or so.

Damn, you all must have some dirty air where you live. Last time I cleaned my filter after about 20k miles there was some soot, but nothing to write home about. I can't imagine there would be anything on it at all after only 3500 miles.

I thought they recommended cleaning like every 30-40000 miles.

Hmmmmmm.

Depends on where you live.

If you live in Iraq you probably want to do the 3500-mile change...

Here's mine before and after cleaning/charging.
It had 10,000 miles on it when I took it off my 2001 CL.

My 2003 has 7,000 on it now, so I'll probably clean it before winter sets in for good.

Remember, part of the filtration actually relies on some dirt mixing with the oil to make a goooey mess that actually works to trap particulate matter.

Get the K&N Clean/Recharge kit.
It should be about 10-bucks at your local auto store.

Yeah, ever seen what the outside of a car looks like near a freeway? And, have you ever looked at the plants at the side of the freeway when it hasn't rained in a while? :shakehd:

There is rubber dust, carbon, and brake pad dust floating around. I use Hepa filters in my place that are rated for 1-2 years and need to change them every 6- to 8-months.

The cleaning kit is cheap and is available at PepBoys, Autozone, etc.

3500 seems a tad aggressive -- unless you live near or in a polluted oil field with sandstorms -- and I even bought a couple of cleaning kits and a spare air filter to be able to keep the intake breathing through a filter at ALL TIMES.

That's real funny everyone!!! Sorry bout the caps lock thing! Damn shawn the filter must not be a CAI??? My little AEM filter barely fits in there now!!! LBC is real bad and I'm always on the freeways with the SEMI'S (Big Trucks) HAHAHA.

Also, sounds good EricL very smart! A 2nd filter would be good!

Yes, it is.
You’re looking at the famous (infamous ) Xephyr CAI.
It has a much larger filter then any other’s I’ve seen sold for the CL.

Damn, I gotta clean mine now. It's been in there for a while now. I'll change it when I change my car back to stock in a few weeks.

That's the only reason why I posted this because if it wasn't for that damn tornado then I would have never cleaned mine until ???

check my Fotki page for recharging how-to...also, there r 2 threads, 1 here in Car Talk and the other in Useful Topics forum on recharging commentary w/ pics

i recharge my filter every 6 months, no matter what mileage (i don't drive nearly as much as i should)...i just recharged last Sunday, and my baby's nice and peppy

BTW, if u read the recharger kit carefully, u'll notice that the dirt and stuff actually helps do the work, so just b/c the filter's dirty, that doesn't mean it's not doing a good job

If you lived in Iraq, you'd probably be wearing the filter on your face.
