A/C engaging in Auto mode in cold weather. WTF?

Hi, I don't know if this is an issue or not.. I've got a 2003 CLS NAVI, and if I push the "AUTO" button for the climate control, the A/C compressor engages.. even when it's cold (<50) inside/outside.

This has been since day 1 of the car, and I usually just manually turn the A/C off, but keep the system on "auto". It works fine in the winter and for when I don't want to run the A/C.

But anyhow, is this normal?

thanks..

AC gets out moisture from the air as well. In auto mode it is always running, I think

your A/C condensor will come on when you have the defrosters on as well...

All you need to do is raise the inside temp and turn the defrosters off...

Lets say it is 68 in the car.... but you have it set at 63... the A/C will come on till the cabin temperature reaches 63.....

did that help ya?

nah, the temp is set at 67-68.. outside temp is 34 (today). the defrosters are all off, etc. Basically it's when I first start up the car..

IIRC the manual says to leave the A/C on all the time even in the winter and even when using the heater... Their reasoning is that the A/C system will work to heat or cool the car, and it helps to "clean" the air by keeping the humidity under control.

In my '03 TL-S with NAVI the AC is always on whether I'm using the heat or not when I press auto. I usually turn the A/C off manually.

When it rains out, my windows always fog ... so if I use auto, it prevents the windows from fogging (drier air) but it still heats up the car. When its not raining, I turn the A/C back off manually.

From my experience I'd say this is normal.

Ok thanks. That makes sense and is what I suspected.. but just wanted to make sure. Seems like a waste to have it on year-round.

I agree and I don't leave it on. I do what you mentioned and just manually turn it off unless my windows are fogged up.

Why waste the gas.

Yup thats normal, You can hear the compressor kick on and off. If it's not rainy outside just hit the A/C button and turn the A/C off and you can still adjust the temp control by adjusting the temp gauge, but leaving the fan speed on Auto.
Hope that helps.

Interior humidity is a big deal in cold... ever seen the inside of your windshield fog up?

the A/C is a must when d frosting the windows. Other than that just turn it off after the windows are done. Like stated earlier it controls the moisture in the air.
