If you suck a column of water up your intake, your engine is toast. But that should only happen if you drive through a foot or more of standing water. Personally, I'd sleep better knowing I had a bypass just in case.

This has only been discussed about a million times - I suggest you use the search engine to read all the arguments for/against it.
Bottom line however is:
No, There is a 99% chance you won't need it.
And in that 1% you can probably get away with it if you are careful not to accelerate in deep water.
However, if you don't get away with it, you will blow up your engine.
Any other minute questions about the bypass you can find by searching. Or click on the link about the bypass valve in my FAQ (link in my sig)
