oddly enough, my sales guy told me there is none b/c engines nowadays are sophisticated enough to not need a breakin period, despite what the manual says (600 miles i think?)

You won't get the full performance for several thousand miles.

I noticed that the engine was significantly livelier after 4000 miles.

My performance continued to improve after the first 2,000 miles or so. It seemed to have peaked around the 10K mark. I have 20K now (after 1 year of ownership tomorrow 5-27 ). It seems to run better now than 6 months ago.

I agree with your statement. My car has 4100 miles on it, and there is definite difference from when I had 600 miles. The car is so much faster at all speeds, it almost seems like I added headers!
