brake upgrade

i have a 03 cl-s and wanted to upgrade my brakes to the brembo set that comptech offers. i love the car, but i the brakes on it isn't the best. has anyone made this mod? if so, how do you like them and is it worth the upgrade? what size rims did you get? and is there a rear brake kit?

There are a bunch of guys with the Rotora BBK. It's a lot cheaper than the Brembos. And they work pretty good. I have never heard a single bad comment about them.

25.4mm per inch. 330mm is equivalent to 13 inches. The one piece refers to the rotor. I'm running the one piece Rotora kit and have been very pleased with it.

thanks for the reply. did you have change wheel size? if so, what size? if not, did you have to do any modifications to the car for the install? where did you get yours & how much did they cost you?

The BBK requires at least 17" wheels. Requires a minimal caliper & wheel backface clearance of ~3mm for safety.

I too run the Rotora BBK. They will run about $1400. I stole mine off eBay for only $800

If you are running the stock wheels you will need to run a 5MM spacer. The best one to run is the H&R spacer rather than a universal although the universal will work also. ROTORA offers 3 different kits.

1-piece 13" Rotor 4-Piston Caliper
2-piece 13" Rotor 4-Piston Caliper
2-piece 14" Rotor 4-Piston Caliper

I am a Master Wholesale Distributor for ROTORA and stock the first kit almost at any given time. PM me if you need prices with your year, make, model and zip code.

I upgraded to the Brembo BBK in June of 2004.

Here's the complete mod:
Wheel: Volk Racing LE37T, 18x7.5 +48 offset
Front wheel spacers:custom 5mm, hub-centric
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, 235/40ZR18/RF
Brakes: Brembo Evolution Front Brake Kit, 13"; Rear Cross-drilled Rotors; Rear Stainless Steel Brake Lines; Rear Brake Pads, Metal Master; Motul 600 Brake Fluid

The brakes have much greater stopping power and don't fade as compared to the OEM brakes. But be warned, this mod; BBK, wheel, tires, etc... isn't cheap.

How much clearance do you have with the 5mm spacers?

1.5mm clearance between spokes and calipers. I spoke with Brembo and they said 1.5mm is plenty as long as you have forged wheels. Otherwise, they recommend min. 3mm clearance.

Interesting. Sounds like I'll need spacers when I put mine on then.
Didn't you also wind up putting on the longer wheel studs?

You are correct. I had to order some longer studs (59mm total length) from CompTech that were out of a 12.4" BBK for an NSX. They were stronger and about 11mm longer than the OEM studs (48mm total length).

I'm using my stock 03 CL-S wheels with a 5mm spacer. It's tight but works fine.

To be clear, this worked for your Rotora BBK. This may or may not work with the Brembo BBK.

True - I can't vouch for the Brembo kit.

If it does work for the Brembo kit, then I'm going to feel like ... could have saved myself a ton of money.

thanks everyone for the info. sweet setup with the brembos. i jealous and wish i could afford that setup. i think i will go with the rotora bbk system w/ the spacer. they seem to be reliable and a whole lot better than the stock setup. anyone recommend doing both front and rear systems or just do the front and upgrade rotors and pads in the back?

i am in the process of installing the rotora bbk, and the rotor itself is bigger than stock, and the rotora has 3 more pistons than what the stock one has, pretty pathetic imo. lol I be running the bbk with stock rubber brake lines until i have time to drop by a shop to have them swap the lines for me because I couldn't get the stock ones off (to tight). Anyone have any recommended shop around socal area that does lines and brake flush for cheap?

Are you using line wrenches to change your lines? They make a world of difference and is the only way to loosen fittings:

Most of the stopping power is from the front. At a minimum, I would go with upgraded pads in the rear with similar braking characteristics to the front pads. Axxis Ultimates are ver similar to the front Kevlar/Ceramic pads that come with the Rotora BBK.

Depending on how far you want to go on the rear:
1) Upgrade rear pads - (Axxis Ultimates match nicely)
2) Swap out rear brake lines to steel braided. The front BBK will come with front only steel braided lines (Rotora sells matching rear lines separately).
3) Flush your whole brake system and replace with a good high quality fluid. (Motul 600 is highly recommended)
4) Replace your rear rotors to match the front. I went with Rotora slotted and crossdrilled since that's what I went with on the front.
5) Paint your rear calipers - purely for looks.

If you're going with ss brake lines in the front, then I'd upgrade the rear brake lines to ss as well. You could leave the stock rotors if you like, but replace the rear pads with pads that have the same type of material as the front pads. I would also replace the brake fluid with a high temp brake fluid.

If you really can't get them off, try Street Image in Baldwin Park. Talk to Arnold, he's a vendor on this board. They do good work.

Hey, Newbie Here..
I Just picked up a 2001 CL-S yesterday and after driving it around for a day I had an issue i wanted a better opinion on.

The seller put on drilled and slotted rotors with new pads but when you drive the car there is a very rough feel in the pedal. It almost feels like somethign is rubbing. The car has the stock type S wheels.

Can it be that he ordered the wrong parts, or do I just need to add spacers to provide more clearance for the brakes.

Any advice would be great.

Forgot to add, he replaced the pads and rotors 3 weeks ago. So they are all pretty much brand new but the ride is unbearable.

Maybe he forgot to lube the slides. Spend $1.99 on grease at Autozone and remove the caliper and lube the slides or pay someone $200 to do it for you.
