Brake / Rotor Question

I brought my car in and asked the mechanic to check the front breaks. I saw the brake pads were low. So he checked them and said I need new pads and rotors. So I said rotors too? (I had them changed about 8 months ago) He said yeah you are getting a shimmy when breaking at high speeds and you cant cut those rotors.

Advice / Opinions please

It's brAKE

Are you getting a shimmy when braking from high speeds? You should know, you don't need a mechanic to tell you that. If you're getting a little vibration, your rotors are probably warped a bit. You can have them resurfaced if they're blanks.

What kind of rotors do you have? slotted/drilled?

It is when I break from high speeds. I have regular rotors neither slotted or drilled.

Mechanic said you cant cut these rotors. (like I said there not old - 8 months) And I drive mostly on the highway and I am easy on the breaks.

BrAKE!

Assuming your mechanic meant "resurfacing" when he said "cut", I don't understand why. I'd expect there to be plenty of material left if they're only 8 months old

I'd check out another shop, just to be sure.

I thought I remember hearing you can't resurface drilled rotors but I'm not 100% on that.

that seems like it could be true.
But I have regular rotors. I have had rotors resurfaced multiple times in my life. Once he said it cant be done I told him to forget it and I will bring it somewhere else.

Ok, yeah I must have misread.

Sounds like you're going to need a second opinion.

IMO it's not worth resurfacing the stock rotors. They are total garbage and warp easily. Reducing their thickness (no matter how minimal) is not going to help their structural integrity. Get some good quality rotors and be done with it. I recommend Rotora slotted.

If you're up to it, upgrading to NSX or Legend calipers will also reduce the chances of this happening in the future.

Im not saying your wrong but I never had problems with my brakes or rotors. They perform well. Why should I pay all that extra money for a better rotor and pads. i am not racing this car, I use it for everyday driving. Stock or replacements do the job.

I didn't use mine for racing either, but the easily-warped rotors and single piston setup are a well documented weakness of the 2G CL.

If anything just change you pads to a semi ceramic one, they will help with the heat issues, but yeah the single piston caliper with that big of a brake pad makes a large hot spot which tends to warp rotors, get your rotors turned at a dealer. Yeah it may cost more than some shop but I am pretty sure they will do it.

So while we're on the subject...

I've heard different things about the legend caliper upgrade. Do you or don't you need to have a special bracket made so it'll fit on our cars?

If I were OP, I would just replace the pads then do a proper bed-in. If you resurface, especially if you arent experiencing warped rotors right now, then your rotors will become more prone to warpage. If your rotors look good (no hot spots, glazing or deep groves), I say just slap the pads on there and go.

I have slotted and drilled rotors. the mechanic told me there are hot spots on them and that they are done for and can't be turned. is it really true that u can't or shouldn't turn slotted rotors. got new pads on it now, and it seems to rub on the rotors, is that normal for newly installed brakes.

Pads are supposed to drag on the rotors at all times.

Only some shots will resurface rotors that are driller or slotted. Some of them dont have the proper tools to do it.

OP - does your steering wheel shake under braking?
