brake problem, please help

ok i brought my car into the dealer and now its not getting done until monday cause they need to order a part from california. I guess its a spring that works with the rear driver break pad. Their gonna fix that under warranty.

He told me i have about 10% pad life on the pads. they want 190 bucks for their new oem pads and install.

They want 130 bucks just to install pads if i bring my own in.

what do you think i should do. Should i buy other ones and get them shipped to me, and spend over 200 bucks all together, or should i stick with the oem pads and spend 190?

im so pissed right now, 42k miles on this car and i need pads that cost an arm and a leg.

Have them fix the current problem and install the new pads by yourself or with the help of someone. Even checking a local shop for pricing wouldn't be a bad idea.

Green Stuff and DIY!!!

I switched my stock to Greenstuff and love it...and the whole job for all four wheels took a little over an hour once I had it all in place.

190 to do a 30 min job...yeah right.

I have a question though...I've been told that I can't take off the rotors and refinish them myself...that I have to have them refinished while ON the car...is this true???

i can get any of these next day shipping. what does everyone recommend.
my buddy had greenstuff and lasted only a month, while others said they are good. So undecided right now.

i just checked out that link and did some searching on here and it seems like im just gonna get the oem pads. i dont wanna deal with rotor warpage, sqealing from the pads, and all other sorts of probs im hearing about aftermarket pads.

it seems as though its hit or miss with peoples' expericnce. some say their experiences are good, and some say they were bad with the same PAD.

considering what the rear brakes do, an upgrade isn't really that necessary, but $190 is kinda steep. consider getting something after-market and doing it yourself, take the $140 you saved and put it towards something else.

fala: i was under the impression that it was pretty worthless to resurface the rear rotors as they are solid 1-piece. (that was just a friend who is a mechanic, so I'm open to other opinions)

I took mine off myself to get them resurfaced. I brought them to a local shop to get them machined. It cost me $9.50 each, doing the brakes yourself is easy, except that screw on the rotor you need a special tool to remove those screws.

This is Untrue for both unless you have the equipment to do them yourself. Do resurface rotors, you need a brake lathe. Usually only machinists and brake shops have them. Some shops even send them out to be recut because the lathe work is so cheap to have done, they cant justify buying the equiptment.

For your second part of the question, the rotors need to be off the car to cut them, you cant do it while they're still mounted to the car. Unless ofcourse you're using sand paper but thats not a fix, its a temporary solution to an existing issue. It also means your ass needs new brakes really soon and stop sanding them.

And for the others, you dont need that retaining screw anyway... it just holds the rotor in place as an "extra" hand when you're redoing them. Its not necessary to have though. For the 2 minutes of struggle it saves you in putting new rotors on, to me its not worth it. I usually find it more difficult to get the damned thing back out again.
