Blacking out chrome emblems and trim. First post!
Hey all! I've been lurking on here for a while, mainly checking out all of the SICK CL's that you guys have here. I picked up my NBP on black 03 CL-S 6MT last June, after my original 01 CLP was totaled by a negligent douche that missed my brake lights in front of him. I LOVE my CL-S but I'm starting to get that itch if you know what I'm saying... The CL's on here with the blacked out treatment just look strait up clean. I want to start with a rear ACURA removal and am planning on blacking out the emblems on the rear, the front, the chrome trim in the grille as well as the nasty cheap-looking chrome window trim. What is the best treatment to do this? I think I remember someone using spray tint? Also for your viewing pleasure I attached a pic of my first love after her accident.
Thanks guys!

Thanks guys!

Dang, thats a pretty hard hit dude. Glad you were ok after that and welcome! Great job on picking up a six speed, Maybe one day Ill do the swap in my 01. You will enjoy lots of information and help on here. Enjoy!
Thanks guys! Yeah, me and my girl were mainly ok, didnt get hurt too bad, have some lingering back and neck probs but hey, I'm still here. There is a silver lining though. I'm going to use my settlement money for some black RJ Legends and a drop. Feeling that TL lip spoiler as well. StreetKA thats exactly what I'm going for, that flat black emblem is sick. I'm thinking i still want some type of gloss on the grille insert and the window trim though. Any suggestions on a finish?
i used "blackout tape" because of its strength and durability, and ease of removal, but if i was to do it again i would use either plasti-dip or straight spray and clearcoat (because i wouldn't take it off, it looks so good)

I used Black out tape...but kind of a beotch to work with and not as clean as I wanted it to look.
2nd time around will probably be plasti-dip or something similar.

I'm definitely looking into the plasti-dip, the stuff seems like it will last better than trim paint. I'll get some pics of the new one up as soon as I get her cleaned up. Toledo winter doesnt give me much room to keep her clean. Diggin that matte black grille insert for sure!
So I'm tossing the idea around of adding a factory spoiler with the clear LED center light, and blacking out the red part of the tails. Also I want to delete the amber corners and install the TSX projector lows like Civic's got. Badass mod sir! I have this vision of want it to look like in my head, just waiting on the fundage. Any thoughts? I guess I'm going the 'murda'd out' route lol.

Post up pictures if you do decide to do it the Plasti-Dip route!

Here's what my rear end looks like. Similar to what you want to do except I tinted the spoiler light instead of getting a clear one. I think tinting it makes it blend in to the spoiler better. Making it clear will definately make it stickout more against the black but would match the top of your tail lights.
BTW, the tail lights aren't really that dark, its just the picture. There is still a hint of dark red.
azn, thats pretty damn slick
. What did you use to tint the tails? Spray tint or window tint? Also do you get a good amount of light through it? I'm going to do the same but I don't want to sacrifice too much light output. Don't want another rear end collision like above
. Need to find a good tint %. Again that ride looks mean!

yea, its definately not that dark in person. Its just a deep, dark red similar to this:

There seems to be a good amount of light, the spoiler LED is still just as bright.
I had someone local do it with tint called oracle, he said it was good stuff. You could always buy taillight tint on ebay then have someone install it or DIY. I didn't have much success myself but its not too difficult. Either way, buy the bulk sheet kind not the precut kind. Its a lot easier to work with and the stuff is easier to cut anyways. Window tint might scratch cause its not for exterior use.
Other members tint their tails by using the spray kind but I've heard that its pretty hard to remove. With the sheet of tint material, you could just peel the stuff off by hand.
Don't get the static cling stuff either. Its hard to take the bubbles out and it doesn't stick well.

I did my grill with paint. Havent done the emblems yet, waiting to buy new ones first. I went to a local paint/color shop and they were able to mix me up some NBP and put it into a spray can. After that just scuffed everything up with a red scotch brite pad, washed with degreaser, wiped with rubbing alcohol, dusted some adhesion promoter over it, primed it, hit it with the NBP, then couple coats of clear, heat gunned it all dry. whole process took like 2 hours tops (although i used to work at a body shop). I vote you do it this way, because it is actually the same paint with the blue pearl and everything. And it should be enough to do all the stuff you want to do in one can ($18).
u can use a candy black paint its more of a tint and some places can even put it in a rattle can for you or you can find a house of colors paint to do it. ive used it tail lights on black civics and str-4's. it turns out really nice.... like black chrome
