Best way to use the SS?

For those of you skilled in the SS mode, what is the best way to use this feature? I barely use it, and never have driven a stick before.... Can you only go a certain MPH per gear, and then shift to next gear after you reach a certain speed? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!

The best way to use the SS is practice, practice, practice.

I usually use it to cut some one off or just to get some extra kick when I'm driving. Just remember the top speed for each gear like 65mph for 2nd and 110 for 3rd. and you'll be fine. say you where driving 50 mph in d5 and u want to pass some one. Throw your stick in SS and down shift to 2nd and gunn it and you should be in the high rpm's where all your power is at.

I found that its best use is when overtaking another car so that you can already be "in gear" when you're ready to pass, not having to wait for the downshift. The car doesn't seem to perform much better than full-auto in a drag race with VSA off. The only other time I may use SS is when climing a steep hill or in traffic and not wanting the auto to shift on its own.

The Best SS feature, as mentioned, is to use it to pass someone on the HW, say you are doing 55-70 on D5 (i.e., 5Th gear at this speed, some 2200 rpm) and you decided to pass some one...

Shift to SS, tab it twice to the back, you will down shitt to 3rd your rpm would jump to 3.5k-4.5k rpm (power band) even without going full Wide Open Throtle (WOT), you will see how your CL-S will graceously accelerate to 100 MPH in few sec.

Im my opinion, no Auto can do that, only manuals would do....and I pretty sure many driver can not double-downshit as fast as our SS.

Just redline every gear and you will be ok.

I only use Sloppy-Shift (oops I mean Sport-Shift) when I am driving the back roads by my house.
I use it to down shift when entering a corner or to hold a gear when coming out of one.

In the city I keep it in D5 or D4 because it’s not much use in traffic.
In a straight line race I think the best thing to do is put it in D3 or D4 with VSA off and mash the pedal to the floor.

It is a fun toy to play with, but I would trade it for a true manual in a second.

PS….kensteele, I think you need to write an FAQ on your SS methods.
I think I remember reading something long-winded that you posted 2 or 3 forums ago that had some good tips in it.

I kinda disagree Shawn. I think the SS feature is great in traffic since it allows you to hold a gear w/o having to keep stabbing the brakes by using the compression of the engine to hold your speed simply by letting off the loud pedal. I rarely (2x/week?) use auto. That disconnected feel from using it in auto mode drives me crazy. How many out there heel and toe from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd? Try it, takes some practice so the front end doesn't head for the pavement but makes driving the car just a little more pleasurable.

2. freeway merging, stay on the pipe.

If you are accelerating heavily, because of the SS lag, you'll need to upshift a bit early. That way it shifts right a redline and you don't risk fuel cutoff (which will likely ruin any graceful show of speed and/or prowess).

I'll have to go back to "the other forums" and look at my previous posts. Today my posts are not so long-winded.

I agree, you've got to keep in mind and learn to adapt to the "lag" time that occurs between when you initaite a change in gears and when it actually happens.

I've found SportShift to be VERY useful in AutoX. 2nd gear tops out at 69 mph, and while I've only been to one race so far this year, I didn't hit the top of second once. It was nice to be able to concentrate on the course while having all that torque available coming out of the corners without having to shift once. I just put it in SS and forgot about it. Don't get me wrong, a manual would be preferable (as would rear wheel drive), but until I trade my CL-S in on something a little more AutoX oriented, I'm well pleased with my baby.

Everything above and remember 3rd gear rules. Like mentioned above 3rd tops out at 105-110, so have fun.
