Best Digital Camera to capture the CL-S?

I just picked up a Canon A20 and it seems to do all the little things a digicam should do. I have a few days to try it out and either keep it or return it. I've been looking around and the Canon Elph S100 looks really nice too. I'd like something that I can put in my pocket and actually use frequently.

Can you guys give me some input on what you think is a good camera, price and features you've found useful?

Thanks a bunch!

Also that deal comes with the standard Canon PowerShot S10 camera kit with a carrying case, an extra 32 MB memory card, and a spare 2CR5 disposable lithium battery.

other good digital camera sites:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/

i just bought two canon s10 kits from amazon for my sister and brother as graduation presents. the price was right. i was considering the s100 but i couldn't justify the extra cost for a gift (times two). the downside to the s10 is the disposable battery; a rechargeable battery kit is another $100. so now my brother and sister will have to shell out for the rechargeable batteries.

if i was buying for myself i probably would have sprung for the canon s100 since it comes with a rechargeable battery already and is physically smaller. only downside to the s100 is lack of microdrive support that the s10 has.

i myself have a nikon coolpix 950 which is an excellent digital camera but a still a little on the pricey side at $699 (but i've had it for two years and paid $900).

another popular high-end choice (and a better choice for $699) is the nikon coolpix 880 which was recently named best camera over $500 by one of the pc magazines (cost is $650).

i'm happy to answer any other digital camera questions posted in this forum.

$300 is a tough price point. i'd recommend stretching to $350 and then you have a wider range of excellent choices, like the aforementioned canon s10 (2 megapixels, preferred), or the olympus d-460z (1.3 megapixels).

the cameras in the $300 range and below are more "toy" cameras and you usually give up optical zoom, pixels and speed. my first camera was like that and i quickly found myself wanting more. i think that many people buying <$300 cameras will probably be disappointed. i understand cameras at these prices have high return rates.

if you must have a recommendation for $300 or less, i'd feel comfortable with the olympus d-360l at $269. it is 1.3 megapixels, no optical zoom, probably not the speediest.

also another thing to keep in mind when buying a digital camera is the startup cost of accessories. digital cameras come with the smallest memory card possible and you will certainly want more, plan to spend at least $50 on that right away and probably more down the road. and if you buy a camera without rechargeable batteries (most), plan on another $40 or more for those, because you can't survive with a digital camera and alkaline batteries.

i'd recommend http://www.techbargains.com/ as a good site to look for hot deals and coupons for sites like amazon.com, buy.com, staples.com, etc.

You can get the 460Z for $280 - don't buy
from amazon, you can get much better prices if you look around. Try www.computershopper.com for starters.

It's a decent enough camera. I have a
C-2020 myself, and love it. (Tho I'd trade
it for a C-2100UZ in a heartbeat!)

Unless you are a hard-core photographer, or
print lots of 8x10" photos, a 2 meg camera should be plenty. Even 2 meg pictures are respectable at 8x10. Not razor sharp, but good enough to be mistaken for film.

If you can cough up the ($580), the Olympus
C-2100UZ is an AWESOME camera. It has a
stabilizing lens which makes taking clear
pictures MUCH easier, especially at night.

And it has 10x zoom! Zoom rules. I want more zoom.

I'm an olympus fan - Wonderful wonderful quality. I've given my 2020 SO much abuse it isn't even funny and it still works like a charm despite being rained on, hailed on, and dropped on rocks.

i only buy from the handful of the mail-order vendors that i feel are reputable and have good reputations (amazon.com, buy.com, outpost.com to name just a few). i have heard a lot of horror stories about sleazy mail-order vendors. that means i often don't pay the absolute best price but that's a tradeoff i'm willing to make.

http://www.resellerratings.com/ is a good site to check on the reputation of mail-order vendors.

Yay, a topic I actually know something about!
I'll compare 2100 vs 3040, tho, since they're the same price. (3040 = improved 3030)

They're very similar.
3040 is a 3.3 meg camera (2048 x 1536),
2100 is a 2.1 meg camera (1600 x 1200).

3040 is 3x zoom, 2100 is 10x. But that
means 2100 is bigger and heavier. (but it
is surprisingly light regardless).

2100 has stabilized lens, (very useful for keeping camera steady during high-zoomed, or dim shots), and a TTL viewfinder. 3030 has one of those regular 'window' viewfinders which can be way off for close shots.

Besides that, they're almost identical.
I'm a huge fan of the stabilized lens - a friend with a 2100 came on a camping trip. We both were taking pictures at the crack of dawn. His came out beautiful and mine looked like CRAP!!! Too dim for my shakey hands, I guess. However in less extreme cases my camera (2020) took wonderful pictures.

I'd give my left leg for a 3.3 meg version of the 2100 but that ain't gonna happen.

Well here I come to spoil the day! Take a look at the Fujifilm Finepix 2400. 2.1 Megapixel, flash, 8MB smart media card. Easy to use and closer to the $300 price point you are looking for. You can buy it for $309 at www.tristatecamera.com For another $69 they will throw in a case, battery charger and 4 NMh AA rechargeable batteries, and a 16MB Smart media card. Here's a pic for a sample

This is medium resolution making a picture size of 358Kb. 1600X1200 pixels. I like it a lot.
