Ballast removal?

Hey guys, my friend's driver side headlight is acting up. it's usually out but sometimes, after a few slaps/hits, it turns back on so it leads me to believe that it isn't the bulb or ballast that's broken and that it's just poor wiring (it's recently been in an accident). So my question is, does my little theory make sense? And, if i were to check the wiring, how would i go about that? i looked at the thing and there seems to be some sort of protective cover w/ a special screw. i did a search and it basically said i have to remove the bumper to remove the headlight, and then i would have access to the bulb/ballast/etc. Thanks for the help.
