bad gear box )=

I've been hearing a slight whining noise lately from my gear box; very subtle.
Only after 15mins of highway cruising and you get on the pedal to pass, you would hear a slight whining noise.

On my way home from school today; had my windows open and i stepped on it to pass a Camaro and all you heard was a loud; whurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sounded like a Comptech Supercharger!!!
The guy later asked me if i was FI... lol!!!

sigh* so yea; i need a new gear box $3500 prob w/flywheel and clutch kit. $~~~~~

Doesn't pay to get it rebuilt and have it done wrong...\

anyone else gearbox went on them?

Have 68k on mine.

for some reason i dont think your gearbox is bad.

what your explaining sounds like the sound is coming from your xs headers

It could be many things. You have to isolate the sound. It could be you CV joints, a motor mount, brakes, wheels, tires, etc.

I would not be so quick to blame the trans cause the 6Mt track record is outstanding.

Don't be so quick to Judge people. Not a good trait.

I bought my CL for cheap because of a Blown Clutch. CT car.
Bought it to my shop and dropped the box; changed clutch, bearing, and resurfaced fly wheel.
Clutch pedal was very sloppy so i changed the slave and master, everything was alright from there.
From day one it had that subtle Whining noise. Most likely from the shaft or gear bearings. Probably from all that snow CT has. One wheel iced to the floor and the owner just kept stepping on it.

Well, if the prior owner didn't know how to drive a stick, they might have messed up the syncros... With all the things you've replaced on a relatively bulletproof car, it sounds like the prior owner didn't treat it that well... I've got 68K miles on my 6spd... haven't done anything to it except regular maintenance.

We've had ONE member who had the syncros replaced, so if that's the problem, it's a very rare thing. Search for threads started by jproy.

I'm curious how you resurfaced a dual mass flywheel? Normally they are replaced.

It helps if you gave all that info in your 1st post. People would not be so quick if you explained things.

With that said & now knowing what the car has gone through, it does make sense that the 2nd, or 3rd gear syncros are messed up.

Does the whine change with engine rpm or road speed? That would give a clue as to the source.

I got my old gears and synchros if you want them. I think you are either fantasizing about having a blower on the car just a little too much or you have a problem. LOL! I know this is not the time for jokes. That noise could be a lot of things. Unfortunately, it does sound bearing related if you have had the noise since you got the car given the attention you have given it. I am not having any problems with my rebuilt trany. Clutch assembly, main input shaft seal, 1234 gear sets, total $3500 at dealer. I was stuck in Birmingham Alabama and was at the mercy of Acura but they took care of me. The gear transitions are sloppy during the first 15 min of driving but that has always been the case and it seems everyone with MT has experienced it to some extent. Best of luck to you. I am curious to see what comes of this. Jim

i personally did not resurface it; i sent it out to auto parts/machine shop
they did whatever they did with it;
im guessing they removed the bolts and seperated the primary from secondary.

the whine is subtle when cruising, but when i gas it to pass it u will hear it. And maybe after a long highway drive and i stop at a light, and go through the gears @3-4 you'll hear the whining. )=

When you shift gears does the whine change or remain the same?

OK, if the whine doesn't change with engine rpm then we know it's not in the input side of the box; clutch, throwout bearing, etc..

On the output side is the box itself and the drive drain, cv's and such. If it's the box I'd suspect gears, not bearings. The bearings are rollers and if the go bad the box will fail quickly. It might also be tires.

Start with the cheap stuff, swap the tires front to rear and see what happens.
Change the gear box oil, may or may not help but it doesn't cost much and is likely due anyway.

Good luck!

One other thing, it could be coming from the rear, it's hard to tell from inside the car. Might jack it up and see if there's a brake dragging or somesuch.
