Anyone race a mazdzspeed protege?
One of my friends just got one, and I was wondering what to expect:
Mazdaspeed: Greddy FMIC, Greddy turbo back exhaust, Greddy boost con. (12 psi), Greddy type RS BOV, ION SRI.
I believe he's 240 hp to the wheels!!

I haven't but I'd like to race the high school kid down the street from my parents. He thinks he's the shit in that bright yellow bumble bee. I hate it. It sounds like a wind-up toy.

To my knowledge they simply just slapped on a small turbo onto the regular protege motor. they didn't change any of the internals. I'd imagine 12 psi is really pushing that motor and without a turbo upgrade that fmic isn't doing much good than the stocker.

Actually the compression is lowered and its really made for handling. Its got LSD, thicker axles plus many suspension parts which make it awesome for the track. In stock form its rated at 170hp and it runs a 14.9 in the quarter, plus its easily modable. If that thing has 240whp yes it definently has to have an aftermarket turbo because the t25 that comes stock cant go upto those power levels. If he has bolt-on's then he'll beat the CL for sure. If its stock then it all depends on driver unless your on the highway then the CL has the advantage.

Either I googled the wrong thing or the Mazda is nothing to worry about.

the mazdaspeed is much lighter and if he really is putting down 240 at the wheels your toast, plus with the 5AT, he'll have you at the top end, BUT...
the mazda uses a ford designed engine and the reason why they choose that much boost was that any more and the rods snap, those rods are pretty week in that engine.
SO, moral of the story, I think youll loose if he is running what you say he is, but soon he'll be in the shop getting the engine rebuilt or swapped, so youll have plenty of time to laugh at him

wtf are you guys smok'n?
A mazdaspeed protege stock is only 170hp at the crank on the t25 garret.
Even the cl-s AT would smoke it.
Upgrade the turbo the cl-s AT would still walk it from a roll.
CLS6 would destroy it.
.. their top end is pretty horrible too..

n00dleboy, Im sure that you may be right from a roll, but
most people race from a stop, and the mazda would smoke him off the line...
also if he has improved the turbo, Im sure that his top end is where all his power is, so he would get smoked from a roll too if the mazda knows how to drive his F/Ied beast

I think one may have tried to race me on my trip down to florida. He was def on it, pretty quick. I was able to take him from 80-120 in 5th gear though. Only beat him by about 2 car lengths. Could have been in 4th, but I was too lazy to downshift.

No way he's making 240whp with those mods.
170hp @ crank stock with 18% drivetrain loss = 139whp stock.
No way a boost controller, exhaust and a blow off valve gave him an extra 100hp to the wheels. No freaking way in hell.
Not even an EVO VIII or an STI would make that much more power over stock with those mods.

You also have to realize 90% of people put these things in their cars but never tune it correctly. I highly doubt it's tuned well, I really don't see any problems taking him. Even if he does your car looks better

With that said, that's kind of impressive... but I'm still skeptical.
Race him and find out... boosted cars are very picky about their tuning.

Your right an EVO VIII/STI would not make that much power with these mods, but if you take a car that is a lot more restricted it would, like maybe a MSP. Go to the link above, exhaust alone adds 22whp.

I'm not TRYING to defend the MSP, it's just that after reading the TURBO mag. artical it looks like you can make decent hp to the wheels with few mods.
