Anyone know about Porsches??

There's an '87 944 for sale near me. I haven't talked to the owner, but it has 69k original miles, and the body APPEARS to be in very good condition. He was asking $7,900, but it's down to $7,500 now. I don't know if it's a turbo, cuz there's no badging on the rear. I wanna drive it to see what it's like, for sure. Reason I'm asking is that my g/f's Ghetta (Ghetto Jetta POS) is driving me nuts, and I would let her drive my CL-S while I built the Porsche.

Here's a forum:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forum...?s=&forumid=10

I've done some research on the aircooled 911's, don't know nothing about the waterpumpers Except that the 1988 Turbo S is the cream of the crop (low production so they cost about twice as much as a regular NA 944).

I've got several recent "Excellence" mags w/ price guides. Let me know if you want the last issues fiqures for the 944 market update figures for it. I think it was the april issue, so I should be able to dig it up.

edit: Oh yeah, the 944 turbo is also known as the 951.

Awhile back my mom had a 944 turbo (86 i belive). It was a good looking car, and a lot of fun to drive. I took it out quite a bit.

Personally if it's not a turbo, I think the 944's were pretty FUGLY.

Too bad you couldn't buy it now, she sold it with only 26k on it... It was in mint condition.

edit:

i forgot to say, she had a bunch of maintenance done on it in the 9-10 years she owned it.

Being able to purchase a porsche. And being able to affford it are two different things. Maintenance can get $$$.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to find good forums on which to ask questions, so any other ideas from y'all are much appreciated. I'd love to start messin' with a 944 Turbo, but it may not, in fact, be the brightest decision I ever make. Oh, well...we only live once (unless we're cats).

I hear that. My girl's Jetta is killin' her right now. I have replaced, in the last 2 or 3 months, the following...

Front tires (another one went flat this week thanks to a lovely MA pothole)
Front and Rear Brakes
Distributor
Distributor Cap and Rotor
Plugs and Wires
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Exhaust
Now, it's losing coolant somewhere

I'm becoming reasonably adept at working on this damn thing. Hell, Porsches aren't much different, right?

Prices for parts will probably be higher for the 944. I'm sure there are also other things to look out for. I think the waterpump and timing belt are some of the usual suspects on the cars.

I like the Pelican parts 911 forum, so that's why I posted the first link, but the other good/high traffic porsche forum is rennlist:

Of course, I've lost my mind...you know that. She does want a new Civic, but she would rather have the CL-S. :shakehd:

I'm gonna call the guy to get some more info, just to see what's doin' with this car. I probably won't buy it, but I just wanna take a closer gander so I can get the idea outta my ever-lovin' mind.

Yeah, this was the first one I found last night that seemed pretty good.

I don't think the car's a turbo, so it isn't for me. I'm still gonna check it out to make sure, but I don't want a 16-year-old slow car (w/ low miles) to replace a 6-year-old slow car (w/ higher miles). I can look around to find the Porsche I want, if it's something I really want.

It took you how long to figure this out?!?

Not as mad as you'd be losing to a pig like a 944 Turbo, though. :P The '89 reported times of 14.2 at 101, I believe.

Everything youve replaced on her jetta seems like fairly standard maintenance (with the exception of the exhaust???) how many miles does it have on it?

And arent the 944 the front engined porsches??? I could be dead wrong on that one, but if they are I would totally stay away.

I agree, definitely the best porsche forum around. Old Porsches are like boats, the 2 best days of a man's life are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. I've had my 1981 911SC since it was new so I know all of it's history but keeping it running and looking perfect is a total labor of love, there's always something to tweak. If you are anal about how your car looks and runs, then run from this deal, if not, then I wish you the best of luck with it.

Yeah, I know most of it is routine maintenance, but it's the fact that something new seems to go every week. I think it needs a new head gasket now. (Using coolant, but it's not leaking anywhere...burning it and sending it out the exhaust, most likely.) It has 92k on it.

We drove an '02 Civic EX 5-speed (Silver, of course) last night, and she loved it. I liked it a lot, too, but I don't think it's gonna happen. She's too far upside down in her loan on the Jetta, so she's stuck with it for a while longer. I wish a tree would fall on it and total it, so the loan would be paid (GAP Insurance).

the words of someone afraid of being smoked!

Seriously Pete, a p car is not very reliable. The parts are a rip off like anything porsche. The car is a real lag monster. You don't get the low end tq of the CLS, but then the turbo finally wakes up, you go. A 944 turbo would be a fun car to drive, but I don't think as a daily driver. It would be a fun weekend/track car though.

Yo Pete
Wasup Bro?
When i was in high school (oh God I'm old), my girl's dad owned a Porsche dealership and she had a brand new red 944 turbo, and i drove it ALL the time. at one point she lost her license for three months and her dad was way cool and let ME use it like it was mine.
Anyway, that car was awesome (being as though i was like 17 with a new Porsche), but alas it was the turbo (if it is it should have a cursive font emblem on the back that says turbo)
car was very fast and it had a guage that tells you how much gas your burning at any given speed/rpm -- if you floor it it would peg like crazy!
Again, it wasn't mine and it was new, so maintenance wasn't a issue. I still see them around and the ones in good shape still look badass.
if your in the used Porshe market though STAY AWAY FROM 924s
which was the predecessor (wopping 125 BHP 2.0 liter)
and they made some good changes to the 944 in 1985 so look for 85 on

Sup, Stef?

Nice deal you had goin'!

There's no badging at all on the back of this one, so I can't tell without opening the hood. Although, I could look at the dash to see if there's a boost gauge, I suppose. I would never in my life want to drive a 924...that is a bogus-lookin', slow-ass hog of a mobile. (No offense, of course, to 924 owners. )

I'm gonna take another look at it tomorrow, probably, just to put the curiosity to rest. It's not a particularly intelligent, or realistic, move for me to make right now.
