Any ideas what wrong?

My 01 CL-S (214,000) Has now shut off on my 3 times in the last week. First time it happened on the interstate. Felt like the trans went into neutral. I could step on the gas and the engine would rev. I bumped it into neutral, and coasted off the road. As it came to a stop the motor was not running. No lights on , as if it had stalled. Just stopped running. Sat for about two minutes and it re-started and worked fine.

Yesterday same thing happened again. Got it running went about a mile and stopped again.

No codes at all. Never any dash lights like it stalled.
Recently put 6 new coils on. Due to having 2 fail. Idle is still a little funky but that is all????

is your car getting air?
is your car getting fuel?
is your car getting electrical current?

Yes to all./ it runs fine 98%. This shutting down has me perplexed. I am thinking it is related to the trans?

Im thinking a fuel issue. I had that issue on my bike before, where Id lose power but because the engine is in gear, the tranny keeps the motor spinning. Its odd that it would only happen sporadically though, and that when you put it into neutral you could rev it up.

How high did it rev? Was it a smooth sweep?

Battery does not seem to be an issue. the first time it happened on the interstate it seemed like ,(my first thought) was the trans went, because it did not seem to be in gear. That is when I bumped it into neutral to coast to the shoulder of the road. The next two times it just shut down. Again today about a mile from the house. So I just put it into park. Wait a minute or two Then start it up and it goes fine.

I also had same thing happen and thought same that tranny is out, but it was not. I have 1500 watt amp in my trunk and fog lights hooked up to the battery, due to the amp battery connection is usually corroded and thats what led to car shut down now and then just like you explained "lights out" so make sure no corrosion and if any clean and greas it and make sure connections are tight. only other thing could be the alternator.

he said the motor is fine, but its the tranny that goes into to neutral randomly. if thats what it is, then its a tranny problem.

You over heating by chance? Check your coolant level. Engines are know to shut off due to overheating.

Ok again the first time it happened was on the interstate. The car lost drive(like it was not in gear) engine still running. I could rev it. I put it in neutral and coasted to side of road. At that point is shut off. I recycled the key after waiting 1-2 mins and started right up.
The nex three time it happened it was on secondary streets. When it happened it would just shut off. Again I would coast to side of road. Shut off. Wait a minute then it would re-start. There are no check engine codes showing up. ECU?

My lights all work OK. no corrosion on battery. Gauges work. No loose wires visable. When it dies I still have battery because the radio would still be working. So it is not that. I still think it is ECU or I don't know if there is a relay going bad somewhere.

Ignition switch or fuel pump relay. Common problems. Don't start jumping to the expensive stuff. Chceck the relay first

It does, but it's attached to the pump in the gas tank. Replacement requires a new pump. It's not a maintenance item.

Its not really a fuel filter. More like a sock. But u can change it out without replacing the pump. But I'm not sure if they sell it seperatly

Check your fuel pump relay fuse .. not that it could be popped but the metal contacts could be FRAYED. I had this problem last year. The car would just DIE on me even on the highway! Once I replaced the blue fuse, no more issues.

its probably the fuel pump relay, that happened to me several times in my civic, on hot days the solder would move on the relay or wiring whichever, and when I changed out the relay i never had the problem ever again.
