Another tranny bites the dust!

Well... I think my tranny is on it's last leg.

Today as I was driving to work, I had the VSA, Check Engine, and the triangle (VSA) lights all come on. Also, I completely lost my 3rd gear (in SS and regular auto). I had to shift to 4th from 2nd to continue forward. I think I will be heading to the dealer as soon as possible.

Didn't someone go to South Coast Acura to get their transmission replaced? Did you get a loaner? What kind? Any hassles getting a replacement tranny? Which dealer should I go to in So Cal?

TIA

I've only bought at South Coast, but it seems like the guy's at acura-tl comment that they do a pretty good job. On this board people have been happy with both Tustin Acura and Wier Canyon Acura. Don't know about Tustin, but I've been happy with Wier Canyon service.

For a loaner call ahead of time to make sure that htey do have one in for you.

Sid,

Definitely call ahead for a loaner, because you could be waiting a long time for that tranny to come from Ohio.

Ditto....but I didn't bother going to them for the actuator problem since I doubt they would know...

I'm going to go to Mission Viejo first and then most likely South Coast Acura. These are most convenient for me. And I will call ahead to make sure they have a loaner. Thanks for the advice.

People here at work have told me to AVOID MISSION VIEJO ACRUA. When they got their cars back from servicing they had more problems to deal with. If you go to South Coast talk to Sean, he is the service manager there.

Man, hearing all of this about trannies etc. I think the best stupid thing I ever did was buy the extended warranty on the car!!

lol..."the best stupid thing"

I think I'll just get rid of my CL right before the manufacturer's warranty expires, provided that the tranny gives me no more problems till then.

What is up with this transmission problem? All I can do now is fear the day I have to take my car up there to get the tranny replaced and end up fighting with them b/c of the aftermarket mods.

Having a list somewhere of all the people (CL, TL and TLS) that have had to have their trannies replaced would be invaluable. Believe me, if my turn comes I willbe bringing a giant list of all those with trouble to show them should they get nasty.

Heh, maybe if your tranny goes when the 6 speed is out you can have them replace it with the manual :p

JZ is absolutely right about a list of folks with the same prob. It sure is scaring the you know what out of me, cuz I shift the hell out of that thing, both regular and in "slush" shift as some call it..... Course, wouldn't we all jump at the 6 speeder if available? I know I would!

Well my car is at Mission Viejo Acura now and I'm driving a Camary LE (gutless) for the time being. I took the service manager for a ride to try and demonstrate the problems and of course the tranny drove perfectly. The check engine light was on and he mentioned something about a solenoid (which someone here mentioned at one point too). I'll keep you guys posted once I hear what the verdict is.

BTW, I am having my new mufflers/ OEM cat back exhaust put on to fix the "droopy muffler complex".

Yeah, they told me the code that came up for my tranny was for replacing the transmission shifting solenoid I believe. They had it overnighted and are going to let me know today if this was the fix.

I took my car in to have them realign my mufflers because the right one was hanging lower than the left. They ordered me a whole new cat back I guess because the tubing was not bent correctly. At least that is what they told me.

They'll most likely just bend the hangers. I'm supposed to be having this done too while they have my car.

I know they ordered a whole new piece. They sent me a card that the part arrived and I just happened to have this tranny problem shortly after so I am killing two birds with one stone today at the dealer.

Sean at South Coast Acura is a nice guy,
however, due to the constant harassment
by the sale team there I would NEVER return.
They always jump to offer me money for my
Legend when I drive up but then tell
me it isn't worth anything - "We'll give a 2k
trade in for it max." Right ...fsck'ers.

Not to mention they've had 2 shots at
attempting to fix an oil burning smell
on my Legend that still exists today.
What a waste of money and I'm still bitter.

Cheers,
Keith

I told Allan (Service Manager at Mission Viejo Acura) that I come to this site and I know about all the problems on our cars and that we talk about the service we get from dealers. Hopefully that will be a good enough reason to go the extra mile for me. I'm sure he'd get at least some business out of it.

I just got a call from the dealer. They have ordered a shift solenoid and are expecting it to be in by the end of the week. They changed out my mufflers and everything seems to be hanging evenly (according to the service manager).

I'm actually glad that they didn't change out the tranny all together because I'd rather have my original tranny than a refurbished one that was driven by soopa or phil2 on a test drive.

So it looks like I'll get to drive to the BBQ this Sunday afterall.

I was told that they put a new transmission in my car not a refurbished. THey said the car is to new to have refurbished trannies, and it was much easier and quicker just to order a brand new one..SO i was told, but how would you really know what they did..!!

True... you never know with dealers (or other shops for that matter.)

UPDATE!!!

I got a call from the service manager. My car is already done (only a day and a half) and is washed and ready to be picked up. They replaced the shift solenoid and my exhaust. They say it shifts normally through all gears now. I guess we'll see when I take it for a spin.

Good luck! Hopefully mine gets fixed right. Yesterday I was told that they replaced my shifting solenoid too, but that they wanted to let it sit overnight and test it again today and that they would then callme to see if everything is working properly. So far, no call. I'll give them a call before I leave work if I don't hear from them to see what the deal is.
