Alternator Installation

I'm trying to get my Alternator out of my 98 CL and I'm having a difficult time. From the looks of things the only thing connecting it to the car are two bolts, the ground wire, and 2 plugs. If this is correct, than why am I have so much trouble getting the lower bolt out. Does anyone have any diagram or guides for this?

It may have seized in the hole ,I have seen this several times on first gen cars .Lube the daylights out of it and try to take it out .Try turning it in and out a few times going a half turn out then quarter turn back in .It is a pain in the backside to say the least but that is the way I get them out .Last thing you want to do is bust the bolt than you have real problems .

thanks a lot. the bolt i'm talking about is directoly across from the dip stick and that sucker is in there. i'm guessing when i take the alternator out i can drop it to get enough slack to remove the belt.

Take the belt off first to take the tension off the alternator.

There is a single idler pulley that is also the tensioner .You will see it if you stand by the right fender and look down into the drive belts .It is directly next ot the alternator pully .You will need a 14 mm wrech at this time .Place the 14 mm wrench on the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley .Now lift up and to the rear of the car .The pulley is mounted on a spring loaded arm .Once you have the tensioner fully pulled up you will be able to slide the acc. belt off the ALT pulley .Then you can release the tensioner pulley back down .PLEASE BE CAREFUL ,the tensioner has considerable tension on it and if not handles correctly can hurt you if it snaps loose from the wrench .Now you can go ahead and remove the alternator .MAKE certain you have your radio code and disconnect the battery to avoid problems with the always hot wire to the alternator .

I usually use another closed end wrench, looped over the open end of the 14 mm wrengh on the tensioner pulley, for additional leverage. There are long flat wrenches made specifically for this job, but they're about $50+.

It seems like I had to spin it 180* to get it out, but yes there is not alot of room. It's almost like a puzzle to get it out. Pay attention to how it comes out to help you when it goes back in. Isn't there a small bracket the wire harness is bolted to? If so removing that will help.

You shouln't have to, but if it helps, it's easy enough to do. The S/C is in the way for me to remove the fan.
