Aftermarket Clutch/Pressure Plate?

Guys-

While at Moroso yesterday, I spent a few moments walking around talking to some of the vendors. Came across a vendor called Competion Clutch... web site http://www.competitionclutch.com/main.phtml .

I spoke with the owner/engineer , Chris Jewell, (on his business card) and asked him about the problem we as CL owners have regarding an aftermarket Pressure Plate/Disk combo. He acted like he was familar with the setup, being a self adjusting and all, and said he has been working on this and something should be ready in 6 months or so. His words. I don't know if it was lip service or what, but anyone who is interested should go to his site and let him know your waiting for a better pressure plate. His email to save you the time of looking for it is chris@competitionclutch.com

Remember, disks are easy to get, it's the pressure plate that's a bi*ch. I know it would help our car and the more products that companies are willing to put the effort into building the better for all. Let him know that the accord v6 manual shares the same pressure plate, so that opens up the market even more and doesn't limit the product to solely cl's. I say email away and show a strong interest.

The 3rd Gen TL also has the same pressure plate. Only the flywheel is different.

Now that the 3rd Gen TLs are boosted I'm sure some people would be interested in upgrading the clutch. Especially since many 3rd Gen TLs already complain of clutch slip with minor mods.

I wonder since the flywheel is different, if the PP is the same. Are you sure the PP is the same? I haven't checked the part number, but it seems logical that they are the same. Anyone? That's way cool if it is and the market has just increased by thousands more.

I had someone check for me like a month ago and internally everything is identical with the exception of the flywheel.

Interesting that the OEM flywheel for the CL is about twice the price of the flywheel in the TL.

Great stuff, any way you can check the honda 6 spd manual to be sure? I think I checked a while back, but can't remember.

Flywheel is different though. We (CL-S) are the only ones with a lightweight flywheel readily available to us.

I'm going to need a new clutch by the end of the year so I'm anxiously awaiting to hear what you discover.

I contacted them a few months ago & asked about making a clutch for the CLS. They said at that time there was no market. The guy I spoke to didn't even know the CLS had a manual option.

If this takes off I actually get a pretty good discount with Competition clutch. I sell it to a lot of my local customers. Good quality and good price. So I will try and help out with the price.

This is great! Since you have a business relationship with them already, perhaps you could bend their ear a little. It all helps and if the momentum is there and with your relationship with them, your input can only help. I'd be the first to buy one without a doubt!

I'll get in on this. I assume this new unit will work with the Comptech lightweight flywheel? I'd like to replace that at the same time.

I see no reason why it wouldn't work with the Comptech flywheel. Although I don't think Comptech sells the flywheel separate of the clutch.

Hard to say, but I'd assume it would as the mounting points would be the same unless they decide to make a flywheel and re-design the mounting points they would use for the pressure plate, then it would not. Did that confuse anyone?

Send them an email, it can't hurt.

Okay guys. I have a few updates. I went to SEMA yesterday in Philadelphia and I spoke to Chris J. from Competition Clutch personally. I told him a little about my business and then got right into it: What's the deal with the CL/TL clutch? He said give him 90 days and you will have your clutch. He also said to please stop emailing him. He is getting bombarded with emails from you guys and he said rest assured, he will produce. So just an update.

Although I'm sure I already know the answer ("too early") but any idea on price? I'd like to replace the clutch by the end of the summer.

That's good news and that's what he told me as well. Sounds like he might have been a little pissed about the emails, hope not because i had nothing but good intentions. I'll be the first to sign up for one if it has more clamping power than the stock pressure plate. Keep us posted.

Too early yet. I didn't really ask. I figured I would wait for actual production before I started talking prices b/c I didn't want to scare him off.

FYI

I spoke with Compition Clutch at the track over the weekend. He has told me he is committed to making a clutch for our car and still claims 90 days. All the emails everyone sent really pushed him. (Same works for Congress and the Senate on issues, Go to www.fairfaa.com , my colleagues and I need your help as does the safty of the flying public, it's a complicated issue, just take 2 minutes on fairfaa.com to send a letter to your congressman, that's all it takes, 2 min. and you don't have to write the letter!)

Your voice was heard though and I think we should email the hell out of all the aftermarket clutch manufactureres for one. I'll work up a list for later.

I'm helping him out and us by sending him a flywheel, used pressure plate and disk. He told me he ordered a new PP from acura and it is off somewhere being measured and finger f**ked for aftermaket design. He is on track to make a flywheel for us as well once mine gets there.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is hope in this department, guarded but hope none the less. Compitition also needs one other person other than myself to test a prototype once he has one completed, PM me if your interested and I'll choose the best canditate. cheers.

So what happened with this? Im in the market for a clutch kit and a flywheel. Not sure if I want to get the Comptech flywheel because of the reliability problems I have heard people have when they combined it with UR pulleys and the stock pressure plate.

I'm going to talk with him at moroso this coming weekend in WPB. Spoke with one of the guys there the other day and it seems we have to be on his time schedule. They still claim to be working on it.

You guys interested in this still need to send him an email from time to time asking for a progress report. Send away.

Did anyone get an email about this clutch from someone named Melissa at Comptech Clutches? I got an email last night regarding the clutch. Her email title is listed as the director of Marketing & Events. The email reads......

"The prototype is still currently under development and I have heard from the R&D department it will probably be ready during the later half of September. Please be assured we are working hard to keep the 6-8 month deadline we had promised in April. As soon as I have more information to provide, I will send out another e-mail."

I haven't checked my email in a while but when I called her about a month ago she told me the same thing, that she would send an update to everyone on her list. Sounds promising. Mine was half worn the day I got my used 03.

Just called them up... the expected release is February 1st. and they should have 1000 units... =/

They are using a PressurePlate from a Prelude apparently and there will be 2 clutches... one rated for 350 ft/lbs and another for 500 ft/lbs.

Whats great is for just under $700.00 we will get PP,Disc,Flywheel. Unfortunately February seems very far away =(
