After market Navigation System Poll

It doesnt look like there are too many of you with aftermarket navigation systems, but here's a poll for those of you who do have them.

Which Aftermarket Navi system do you own (Alpine/Clarion/other):

Optional: Please rate it based on price, looks, features etc):

Thanks!

Had an alpine be4, several of my friends still do, its a nice system, no complaints except I don't remember what it was, since I never had this problem, but there is something with getting disks for each part of the country, which was annoying. But that might have been an older model, I don't know if they are up to DVDs now

I have the Alpine NVA the one with the CDs.. I would recommend the Alpine NVE with the DVD that covers Canada and the US on one disk, I used to have the Clarion but not even close to being as good as the Alpine system.. disks are expensive though for the CD based one.. $150 for each region of the country. ouch.. go with the Alpine NVE if you are interested in purchasing one.

Here is a pic of the old Alpine system:

Do you have the pictures scanned? You can upload them yourself at http://www.photopoint.com Then use the <a href="http://www.acura-cl.com/ubb/ubbcode.html">UBB Code help screen</a> for instructions on how to include them in your posts.

Or you can email them to me .. and I'll upload and post them for you.

Or mail 'em to me and I'll scan them in for you and send them back.

Thanks!

Just wanted to share my two cents....
If you are upgrading your stereo, then get the alpine nav/headunit...otherwise...its a waste, since acura uses ALPINE screens and nav. You may ask your dealer, or open the dash, and read the back of the screen.

Basically...what i was saying is that acura uses alpine products. The navigation, and CD changers in all acuras are alpine. The screens are also alpine. So if you replace the "stock" nav with an "alpine" one...you paid for the same thing twice. You can ask your dealer...the nav unit/screen are alpine.

OH I SEE!! ok .. I actually dont have a nav. Thats why I'm lookin to get an aftermarket one. I know others on here who regret not having gotten it either and so I'm hoping this thread helps us make the right choice.

Sorry for the previous post...i didnt realize you dont have a navi. Yea...id agree with everyone on the alpine. Although only on the DVD one. My friend has the CD one, and has 27 discs for the USA. And the unit is in the trunk, so when you go from NY to Conneticut, ( i dont know why...youd think those would be on one cd) you gotta pull over and change the cds in the trunk.
Plus, a good install (has to be custom done)
will run you about 500-300...depends if you have good friends at bodyshops.

On a side note, people..i want to ask you a favor...take a look at my sig. I want to upgrade my stereo to all aluminum speakers and subs...as a result ill also need new amps. Is anyone interested in buying my current stereo? (ill sell it by pairs only...not one speaker)It is in perfect condition, and only a few months old. I wont talk prices, cause i wanna know if anyone is interested first. Thanks a lot.

I am also looking into the Alpine system, both for DVD playing and Navi.
I didn't know it had extra jacks for a gaming console hookup!

If I put this in, can I use the existing bose speakers and amp? Or do I have to change everything?

My friends 528i, he has the alpine system. It cost him in the vicinity of 4000. I belive 1600 for the head unit, another 1500 for the dvd/cd tray (plays dvd's, but navigation is on cds) and another grand for a reciever. And, he is very good friends with his shop. So i assume you will pay considerably more for a good installation. Now, I dont want to sound like a mom...but I would suggest you put your hard earned money elsewhere...like a system, or even under the hood work. After all, the NAV is just more or less a toy. Its cheaper (if you wanna play movies) to get 2 alpine tv's and a decoder. Streeteffectz might have his store up and running soon, so maybee he can hook you up with a good deal. My advice, 4000 on a navigation is on the wrong side of the car modding scale...

i dont know if you aware, but the stereo in the CL-S is Bose, not alpine. The navi might be alpine, but the stereo is definitely Bose.

Nirv, don't forget the stock navi runs about $2k. So for me who didn't like the stock navi, it will only cost me 2k (over the stock) to get a better sound system, more featured navi (the alpine I looked at is dvd), full dvd movie play, hookups for vid consoles (or even vcr), remote control, and the screen hides away when not in use.
Overall I like it. Most likely will wait for bonus time though.

I didnt say stereo...I said the CD Changer and the navi are alpine. I know that 100%. I am aware the stereo is bose.
And fast daddy...let me get something straight...the Alpine will cost you 2000 dollars OVER the stock navi...meaning 4000 right? May i ask how come you dont like the stock navi...also, i suggest you find someone who has one, and check it out, cause they are very similar. Second, I am not sure...i think the people who modded the bose stereo will know better (i changed mine completely)..i think if you change the head unit (as you have to do with the alpine, since the controls are in teh screen)you might distort the speaker sound. You will then have to correct them, and again, costing more money. Now, if you got some cash burning a hole, the by all means buy the system, it really is great and looks awesome. But i really advise you to check it out first.

he he...and thats exactly what youll get. I hate them. They are not nearly as detailed, and use some other satellites, the ones that those handheld things use. Its accuracy is nowhere near the alpine/acura ones, like +/- 25 feet. Thats like a block. Buy 200 road atlases instead
However...BLAUPUNKT has a head unit, with a navi in it called the travel pilot. This is similar to what AUDI uses.

http://www.blaupunktusa.com/travelpi...lot_index.html

But if you really want my advice, get the
BLAUPUNKT DX-N Navigation. Its made in germany, just like alpine, it works great, and although the prices are not on the site, i am almost positive its cheaper. To see this ...on the left side of the menu, click the DX-N button. Let me know what u think...and no, i do not work for this company I just used to have a lot of their products, and they were great.

he he...and thats exactly what youll get.

But if you really want my advice, get the
BLAUPUNKT DX-N Navigation. Its made in germany, just like alpine, it works great, and although the prices are not on the site, i am almost positive its cheaper. To see this ...on the left side of the menu, click the DX-N button. Let me know what u think...and no, i do not work for this company I just used to have a lot of their products, and they were great.

it actually is convinient to read...cause its just one dark colored arrow. PLus, the voice is there to help you out. remember, you are driving, you cant be staring at the screen. You glance, see arrow showing to turn left, and thats it. What more do you need. Its actually easier to follow than the regular navs like we have.

There are only one set of satellites for ALL GPS devices, at least for this planet.

I read the description on the Ebay auctions: what a crock!

Actually, the Russians have a navigation satellite constellation called GLONASS. Here's a little info on it and GPS.

A couple of years ago, Magellan, I think, was developing a hand held nav system that used both GPS and GLONASS satellites to acheive extreme accuraccy. However, when the US Military removed the induced error in GPS, this two-constellation nav system became unnecessary.

I bet the guys who chose to get the navi option are really glad they did right about now ... seeing all this trouble that we have to go through

I didnt mean different satellites...i meant they have some sort of sensitivity issues...
Also..i do belive there are different satellites for different navigations. The car ones and hand helds are not the same. i tested a magellan vs. stock acura nav...and it wasnt the same exact info...the acura was more informative...the handhelds just like tell you basic shit. I dunno. Myabee I am wrong, but i know 100% the Clarions suck.

Comptech CLS, i dont actually have a digicam, but ill meet up with some people from NY on this post, and ask them to post it up. I just have a lot of work to do, so I am unavailable to meet. Havent even driven my car in a week.
As far as my headunit, I had them take unparinted material ...the same kind and texture as the trim you get from acura..and had my bodyshop paint it the same color as my other trim...red laquer. The color is just like the exterior, just more glossy, and durble/scratch resistant. Cost me 300 dollars to paint all my trim. I am having my car painted.....like my man with the voltage blue paintjob...
but i will have it in a chameleon color...not the shitty green-purple-blue one...Its more like orange to yellow...i know you are thinking gross...but at the NY autoshow...the mazda they had in it was hot. But well see.
