AEM Cold Air Intake-Sound question

I want to buy a cold air intake, but basically for the sound and not the performance. Does it only get loud when in vtec range, and do u hear any extra rumble at idle. How about when u turn the car on and off. Thanks

There is a member who has done a video of the sound. Do a search under "Car Talk" and find the thread about Icebox vs. AEM.
Yes it is loud during VTEC, but in a good way.
The shut down noise sounds like a cap coming off a 2liter soda... The presure release.

you will be very satisfied with the sound AND performance...it sounds beautiful in vtec range, maybe a slightly deeper tone rumble at idle

Ok I found AcuraDSS video, which was pimp. However, I want to get everything straight.

1)From 1,000rpm to vtec, you do not hear any different sound?
2)The sound kicks in only when your in vtec range?
3) When idle the car rumbles a little more deeply?
4) Does turning the car on sound any different, and does it sound pretty good?

Thanks

1. From 1,000rpm to VTEC the engine has a slightly deeper sound. You really don't notice it all that much.

2. The sound only kicks in in VTEC range. Trust me, you will know it when the CAI really takes over.

3. Once again...when idle like when in non-VTEC range, the engine has a slightly deeper sound.

4. When turning the car on, you may hear the CAI hissing, but it is not that loud...hell...talk radio will drown out the slight hissing. Put some 50 Cent in the deck and you will never hear it.

I have had mine for about a week and love it. I wouldn't worry about any negative sounds coming from the CAI, they are very minimal.

If you know someone with Jamaroqui's(sp.) first CD...play track 10 that is truly what the CAI sounds like in VTEC.

1) there is a deep tone throughout the whole powerband, but most noticeable once the engine hits vtec
2) similar to question #1...you'll definitely know when vtec kicks in
3) slightly
4) yes it sounds good

edit: diori: beat me to it

So, can you hear a real loud hissing sound when the radio is off, or is the hissing sound really not noticeable unless u try to hear it. Anything bad about the AEM intake, and you gain about 10-12 hp and 6 lb torque or are those figures wrong?

On mine the hissing is the loudest when I first turn the car on. It may last for a few miles. After that, even with the radio off, I can not hear it. What you do notice is that the engine has a slightly deeper sound at idle.
The only negative thing I can say about the intake is the attachment that is mid way on the tube is a bitch to install and keep in place.
As far as the horsepower and torque, I am not certain. I do notice that rpms will reach the redline a lot quicker so watch your tach.

i got mine at Nopi Automotive for $200.00. I don't have the bypass valve. You can find better deals by searching the net.
I just printed off the instructions from the forum and used those for the install.

Good Luck!

If you want noise...get a WR short ram...although that humming sound might drive you nuts...

I have a "Xephyr" (OMG I said the word!) CAI and it is the best. There is no discernible noise when idling or any other time until you floor and get into the VTEC range. Then the whole engine wakes up and literally screams. It sounds wonderful. It's good for at least 30 "seat of the pants" HP. I'll sell you mine when I turn it in off lease in a few months.

$185 shipped...

I just bought mine about a two weeks ago. The coolest mod so far! Sounds good, the HP feel is CRAZY. I had 3rd gear rubber the other day against a 330.

Beware of install. Check with a few people and make sure you have some time. And you will spill coolant on your floor. No one ever told me that.
