Adding Oil in between Oil Changes

Do you guys add oil in between oil changes? I took my car in for this issue:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159851

The tech said it was normal, that because of VTEC it is possible for one to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Also he said that the oil soak stains under car are normal, how its just gases escaping and stuff??!!! I mentioned the tsb about the rear engine seal, he said in that case I would see consistent drops of oil leaking.

I am not sure how much of that I believe but I wanted to get a feel of how often u guys add oil (if any) between changes.

In 75,000 miles of driving I have never had to add any oil between oil changes. No leaks showing up on the ground either.

Ask a different dealer? Did you go to Ardmore? Many reports of bad service from there.

Consumption during break-in to a degree is normal. Consumption down the road usually warrants some sort of inspection, IMHO.

I have almost 150K on mine, and never have had any oil leak/consumption problems....get it checked out ASAP

Bullshit.

Adding 1QT or oil every 1K is ABNORMAL. Happen to me on my VW, they replaced the entire engine under warranty.

A quart of oil every 1,000 miles is normal? Bwahahahaha!!!

I didn't know you had a '95 Ford Tempo. Please.

My buddy's '97 GS-R burned oil like a sumbitch, and even then he only had to add an extra quart every 3,000 miles or so.

Take your car to a different dealership. He's blowing smoke up your ass. Also, the leak doesn't necessarily have to cause constant dropping of oil. That's when the leak is really bad; evidence of oil soak on the casing is a good indication of a slow small leak.

Definitely take it to a different dealership.

As for how much oil I add between changes...

My first car, a '97 Tahoe bought new, sold with 120,000 miles, didn't require any extra oil between changes.
My second car, a '96 Intrepid bought with 110k miles, now with close to 140k miles, doesn't require any extra oil.
My third car, an '01 Eclipse GT bought new, now with 55k miles driven by my brother, doesn't require any extra oil.
My current car, an '03 TL-S bought new, now with 30k miles, doesn't require any extra oil.

Thanks for the replies. In a polite manner, I was trying to tell the tech I didn't believe a word he said about adding oil in. I didn't go to Ardmore, I went to Montgomeryville Acura. I just double-checked the oil level, I am going to keep an eye on the oil level for the next couple of weeks. If it goes down, I will figure out what to do.

I have never heard about this with any car. I have to add about a quart of oil to my Nissan all the time, but that's due to the nice oil leak I have. I check the oil level in my CL all the time and it is always where it should be. I'd check out another dealer.

Hold on guys, my 97 GSR used oil. About a quart every 3K. Dealer said that "Acura" considers oil use normal as long as the car is not using more than a quart per 700 miles.

Some cars just burn oil. BMWs, for example, are well known for using oil. My CL 6speed has burned a little, (just a pinch) over the last 3k. I noticed a dip in the level after a long weekend in the White Mountains, say 500 miles of very spirited driving. Lots of VTEC and high RPMs. Long way of saying I was beating on the car a little. And it burned some oil. I'm not worried but will of course keep an eye on the oil level.

The Tech was not feeding you BS IMO.

I agree that some cars consume oil -- but Moodist is stating that this is an overall change in the way things are going. IMHO, I would feel more comfortable getting told that my car was an oil consumer after things were checked out (compression test?) mechanically, as opposed just being told to not worry about it.

I hear what you are saying and I do some spirited driving, especially as of lately with the cooler weathers. I do not beat on the car by any means.

I guess I gotta RTFM and see where it says it is normal for the car to use X amount of oil in X number of miles. Also, I am going to keep a closer eye on how much the oil level changes, because too much of a change would indicate something is wrong.

Yes! Although if the technician took the time to check everything out and he didn't see anything wrong, I guess that is alright with me. Honestly, I wanted to get the car into the dealer ASAP and have it documented that I took my car in for suspicions of leaking oil.

If you have oil spots on the oil pan area, your seal is weeping. In time, it may turn into a leak, especially if you drive the car hard. I just changed my rear main oil seal, a $12 part .

Just to clarify, I don't have to add 1 quart in every 3000 miles. I saw some oil soak on the bottom of the car near the transmission area. At first I thought it was transmission fluid, but then I checked the oil level and it was lower than the last time I checked (about 1800 miles ago). So I told the dealer it is near the transmission area and I believe my oil level got lower also. The dealer proceeded to tell me that it is normal to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

I got the car back yesterday, they say they couldnt find anything and that they did not do anything. Two differences I have noticed since I got the car back is that they adjusted the parking brake and my gear shifts are alot smoother!!! I mean it is a day and night difference, 2nd gear is soooo much smoother. Go figure.

They did not tell me that they did anything, but I know my car pretty well and I can definitely feel a difference with the 2 things I mentioned. I wonder if someone had put too much transmission fluid in and that was causing the seepage. I read on here that ppl have had an issue with that.

The odd thing was I didnt feel the shifting difference the day I got the car back, but the next day is was much smoother.

Yes, but I know once before they adjusted my parking brake and didn't tell me until I asked them. At this point, it is all speculation, I just have to wait and monitor the situation.

That’s one thing I LOVE about Honda engines…they very rarely burn oil.
Between my 91 Legend, 2001 CL-S and 2003 CL-S I’ve hardly ever had to add oil.
The only exception was my wife’s 91 Integra. That required a little bit now and then.
But that was a 4-Popper and it was working a little bit harder then the sixes.

I think for the sake of this thread, I should also re-note my experience that I have posted on these forums before --

When my CL-S was brand new, it did consume oil. IIRC, it consumed about 1.5-2 quarts before the first scheduled oil change at 3750 miles, and about 1/2 quart or so between the first and second oil changes. I've diligently documented and checked my oil all along (I pull the dipstick maybe once per week) and there has been no further consumption of note. I'm at about 23K miles (mostly city driven).

When I had the consumption issue I spoke to service managers and techs from two dealerships -- the recommendation was to watch it closely, document the oil level when the car is cold and level, and see what happens. Consumption during engine break-in is not considered a problem, but ongoing consumption through the life of the car may be.
