About that alternator mount and tranny install

Alright, I took my car in today because of a horrible whining noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounded like the top pulley by the engine cover. The Acura tech finds a broken bolt on the alternator mount causing something else to rub against the belt making that whining noise. The problem is that he has one half of this bolt in his hand, and the other is still in the engine block. The service rep said the warranty doesn't cover fasteners and the like.

I asked how does something like this happen, as now they'll likely have to replace the belt, the bolt, and he believes they'll have to partially remove the engine to do so. He gave no explanation.

My question is since I recently had a third tranny install, and a broken engine mount replaced, is it necessary to remove the alternator mount (loosening or tightening) those bolts to complete either one of those repair procedures? I find it hard to believe something like that breaks on its own.

I was in a rental car for a month and half this summer due to an accident, then came the tranny install = rental, and now I'm in one again
Thanks,
Oscar

My arguement would be that "it wasn't like this until the last time it was serviced (tranny install).
In other words it doesn't seem normal for this type of thing to occur.
