I've got 7k miles on my tranny. This is my 4th car with a manual. It's the best gearbox and clutch I've driven.

When I was at the Acura dealership, I got a ride back to work from one of the service people there. He was telling me that they have had a lot of RSX with blown engines cause stupid kids rev the motor to 8000rpm and then drop the gear to 2nd by accident and blow the motor instantly. The gears on the 6 speed are very close together, so you have to get to know them better before you go nuts. I test drove the 6 speed and the gears were soo much closer together than my 5 speed. The clutch on the 6spd is also really forgiving, I kinda liked it. It doesn't push back like all other clutches, you have to let go.

5 > 2 shift like Zapata said. Or forcing the car into a gear. Popping the clutch every time you use it. Not letting the syncros do their job. Forward > Reverse without stop (or slowing down). Shifting without clutch (at non-shiftpoints). Grinding gears...

It hurts me just to think of a list.

With some effort you can damage any part of your car.

Yea, it’s REALLY odd to have a failure in a manual unless something isn’t put together right or under engineered.
Usually this will show itself in the first 1000-miles.

Most likely over revving or a burnt clutch from too many HOT starts by slipping the pedal with HIGH rev’s.
Or the ever popular 5-2 downshift at 80+ MPH.

do you have any trouble launching your car very hard?

i drove a 6 the other nite and could not stop the tires from spinning and smoking. i have 30 years experience driving manuals and never had that much trouble

I havent been driving for 30 years, but have been driving manuals for about 7 and Ive found the same problem. It seems with the stock tires and so much torque, you have to ease the clutch out and not dump it, or else you will spin. I think the best Ive done is smoke them in first and spin 3/4 thru second. I was only messing around, but you can constantly spin in first, even if you only rev to 2K. I pretty sure with better tires, traction wouldnt be a problem, its prob just the all season tires and horsepower dont match up perfectly.

Yes, a proper launch is a tough thing to do.
I’m getting better, but still haven’t mastered it EVERY time.
You need just the right amount of wheelspin, but not too much.
Once the tires grab a bit, I dump the gas and fully release the clutch.
My Falken Azenis tires are quite sticky and if I give it too much clutch early they tend to “hop” instead of spin.
A good HARD launch is fun to do, but not very good for the clutch. You won’t kill the Tranny, but you will take a few hundred miles off the life of the clutch.

I was over my friends house who helped install the headers the other day.
They had just painted a thick white line at the end of his street and he dared me and my other friend to lay some rubber to “break it in”.
He went first and left a nice one with his S-10 pickup (stick) and then it was my turn.
He watched for traffic and told me to go.
I revved it to about 3,000 and let the clutch rip.
I think I left about 40 feet or more of rubber from the stop-sign and continuing up the road where I shifted into second and left another 15 feet.
Lots of smoke and squealing.
I don’t plan on doing THAT too often, but I must admit it was fun taking 1,000 miles off the tires.

If you’re hitting the rev limiter, you’re not shifting soon enough.
That’s not the cars problem, you just need to watch the TACH a bit closer.

I’ve only done this ONCE and that was when I was learning the new improvements that the Headers provided.
It rev’s MUCH quicker to the redline once you get past 5,000 RPM and it caught me off guard.

I know what exactly what youre talking about, it jumps right to 6500 after 5000. Ive hit the rev limiter a few times, but not off the line. Sometimes Im wishing 2nd would go a little longer cause it pulls so hard and forget about 3rd. Im still kind of amazed that this guy blew his tranny already. If anything I would think his motor would have blown, unless of course he was shifting really bad. Oh well, that's what a warranty is for!!!!!!

I hope that this is just an isolated incident. If this guy has already had bent valves, he's probably just driving poorly and beating the shit out of his car. I feel that the drivetrain in this car is very strong. The clutch feels like it has plenty of force (unlike s2k) and grabs really well and the transmission shifts very smoothly.

Someone needs to get used to a close-ratio 6 speed shifter and not do stupid shit... Last thing we need is to attribute stupidity to an outbreak of bad trannies and add to paranoia...
