6-speed and parking brake...

i can't recall any cars with a manual tranny and a 'foot' parking brake...so, i am guessing that the new '02 will have a pretty different console design. i was looking at it today and couldn't figure out where they will put a hand brake without a pretty significant change-hope they figure out how to keep the cupholders somehow. i'm also praying that they will put in a short-throw shifter as well...anyone heard anything on this stuff???

Why not keep it on the floor?

I mean... apart from easy access for spirited maneuvars...

Whats the problem with having it on the floor for the purpose of parking?

I wouldn't want it on the floor for two reasons. 1) I wouldn't want to accidently hit it instead of the clutch. 2) A hand brake is very useful when starting out on a hill. Especially when some dick decides to stop 6" off your rear bumper.

This Acura is a sports car. I think that it should come with a hand brake because if you hit the brake when its on the floor instead of the clutch you f-----.

i'm thinkin the cup holders are outta here...at least in their present guise. hope they don't go with those cheapo 'pop-up' kind on the volvos and audis.

here's the NSX:

http://www.acura.com/model_nsx/nsx_g...sp?main=2&on=0

do the RSX's have cupholders? i couldn't tell on the pics i found

They could make it like the NSX with the p-brake to the right of the gear shift. Our center console is probably wider than the NSX's so it shouldn't be a problem. I'd really like to keep at least one cupholder. My Integra didn't have one and it sucked.

maybe it will be something like the SLK-some dash 'pop-out ' job. (its above the a/c vents):

www.mbusa.com/brand/container.jsp?/models/gallery/360_view/interior_lrg.jsp&modelCode=SLK320

guess we'll have to wait and see...

I thought about that but couldn't remember what kind of car I'd seen it in. I hope they don't do that. I wouldn't want condensation from my cold drink dripping all over the console.

what are you guys talking about?

You cant accidentally hit the parking instead of the clutch. LOL!

You have to bring your knees to your chin as it is to engage it.

If anything its much easier to accidentally engage a hand brake.

Anyway... apart from the "starting on a hill" thing... I couldnt care less... Im glad we have a nice looking center console rather then a half ass cheap looking console like a beemer.

But.. what do i know.

well, if all the bmw and lexus people are laughing at us 'cuz we have a foot parking brake, guess they're laughing at benz too.

the parking brake is pretty high up when it's disengaged...unless they really mess up in designing the clutch, i doubt you'll confuse one for the other.

and i'm confused now...if they do keep the parking brake there, people will complain 'cuz every other car with a manual has it on the console...so acura should follow the pack?

i thought we want auto manufacturers to come up with different designs and stuff.

i wonder if people said, "a honda for over $30k...that's a stupid idea."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you the guy that said every car he ever owned before the CL was a manual tranny?

If so, then please tell me that you don't need to use the parking brake to stop from rolling backwards on a hill! Unless you're an absolute beginning manual tranny driver, you should be able to start from a dead stop on a hill without rolling back at all- without using the parking brake.

Have you ever heard of heel and toe shifting?

A parking brake down on the floor just seems more suited to an automatic trans car. Having a parking brake up on the center console is found on the majority of sporty manual trans cars.

as well as every other Lexus except the IS.

people cant seem to remember this is a luxury-sport coupe. Not a boy racer... and certainly not a BMW.

If ya want the sport then get a BMW. If ya want luxury that ya can have some fun with... then enjoy it.

and yea, Tom... i gotta agree with you... Im certainly not a expert manual driver... i have relatively little time behind the wheel of a manual... but I quickly learned how to start on a steep hill without rolling... even in a big heavy suv like the Passport.

Fair enough...

I still dont understand why though? Is it simply for some spirited driving? Closed track type shit?

I mean... hand or foot operated im not gonna touch the parking brake on an open road.

And I have plenty of fun with the foot one when im bored in an empty parking lot

As a driver of manual transmission cars for the last 16-YEARS or so, I’m laughing at some of these statements.

Both of the Dodge Daytona’s that I owned (86 Turbo-Z & 88 Shelby-Z) had floor mounted E-Brakes.
I drove the Shelby-Z for nearly 6-years and I never once pressed the E-Brake instead of the clutch.

Personally, I would prefer to have a hand brake on my 2003 CL 6-Speed when I buy it.

Yeah, It's really easy to do in a BMW considering the way the pedals are oriented. You can hold a car on a hill using just the clutch but it's obviously not very good for the clutch. The Ford Taurus SHO had a 5 speed and a foot pedal e-brake. It's not that easy to hit it by accident. Besides, you have to push it down pretty far before it even does anything.

That's me. I didn't use the p-brake that often. But occasionally I'd find myself on a really steep hill with some jerk in an auto slowly climbing up my ass at a stoplight. I felt safer using the e-brake to prevent rollback sometimes. The area where I live is pretty flat so I didn't get a whole lot of practice starting on hills. Like maybe once a month. I've heard of heel and toe but never really practiced it. I've heard that not all pedal setups are particularly well suited to it. Besides, I've got clumbsy feet. How about you give me a lesson in your M3 the next time I'm in town?

Yeah, it is true that not all cars have pedals set up for easy heel and toe shifting.

Also, people with small feet seem to have a harder time with it.

But I believe that it is something that ever enthusiast driver should learn and practice. To the true enthusiast, there really is an art to driving a manual trans car.

Left foot on Clutch – Right heel on brake and you “blip” the throttle with your Right “toe” to match REV’s while shifting.

It’s MUCH more difficult to get good at, but it’s fun when it works.

Come on, Shawn-- There's more to it than that! But you're describing REV MATCHING and should be done when DOWNSHIFTING. I guess you could call that heel and toe, but only if you were braking as well.

By the way, you can also use heel/toe to start up a steep hill without rolling backwards or putting any wear on your clutch.

i have not owned a standard car before, i really wanted the cl-s to be my first.. i actually just learned how to drive standard last summer,

but, i think car companies should start using e-brakes on the floor, i think most people here complaining about a floor ebrake, HAVE owned a manual car, and are just too used to it.

For someone to learn to drive standard with a e-brake on the floor, would be TO THEM easy, and if they were used to it, if they had to go to an ebrake off the floor, they probably would complain too.

This is change, people have to get used to it. I mean, this is how life/change works...

da fxxk is this about the e-brake? what is the big friggin' deal about where the hell the e-brake is suppose to be?

Does it matter that much? if u can't move your car from a standstill on a hill (with someone 6" from your ass), then don't drive a friggin' manual transmission car; or learn how to drive one fully before parking on a hill. Personally, that is why I favor our automagic transmission...cause my lame ass can't drive stick!

I guess u guys can debate about the e-brake location...but most importantly, please get rid of the fxxkin' rattles!! I hope they improve next years CL by fixing all the dumb shit problems...

Shawn S- With Heel and Toe you keep your TOE on the Brake and blip the side of your foot or HEEL on the gas to bring up the revs while braking and downshifting at the same time. I have used this technique on the road race track for about 12 years now.

gotta agree with you there. i just wanna do my 180 degree turns-hahaha. can't do that with a foot brake!
i also used to have the habit of braking with the hand brake to slow down after seeing cops. didn't want to get there attention with the brake lights...unfortunately, i am 'aging' into more and more of a conservative driver, so i guess it really doesn't matter where they put the damn thing.
i am SURE we would be laughed at tho if it's still on the floor

You guys are wild..... e brakes are used for all kinds of stuff. If you want your car to rotate in a tight turn, the hand emergency brake will assist you. Ask an rally driver. For those of you who think you can start on a hill by heel and toeing, good luck in San Francisco. The hills there can be as much as 40 degrees. Lots of luck heel and toeing in that.

For those that like it on the floor....you are suited for a luxo barge. Then you will only use it for parking on a hill.
