2003 Mustang Cobra - 390HP, under $35K

I normally don't like Mustangs, but this one actually doesn't look bad in my opinion and the price and 'expected' performance are something that really got my eye!
(I say expected since ford is sometimes problematic in living up to performance numbers.)

It'll be underwhelming, IMO.
It'll still be short of the C5 in straight line and with the 57-43 distribution thanks to the blower, iron block and much heavier T56, don't even try in the twisties. Nice car, but 35+ for a stang? Even pulleying the blower won't net a lot since you can only get so much boost out of a roots.

Buying a bunch of already built SC's is less expansive than developing one on your own. You see this sort of thing in all sorts of industries.
But if the performance of the Cobra is actually what the rumors say... that'll be a sweet machine. Butlike theo other guy said... sometimes Ford is a bit overzealous in the estimates.

The stock 3800 Series II blown engine would run about 7 - 8 PSI boost. This would go to about 11 - 12 PSI with a 3.4" pulley. With a 3.0" pulley it jumps to nearly 16 PSI (and the belt liked to hop off the pulley).
I wonder how Mike is running the 2.6", I need to look at pics. The nosedrive shaft was about 2.5" so he must be extending the pulley position.

I beg to differ. We have the same S/C in the GP and it comes stock at around 9 lbs. or something and people have it pushing 15+ lbs. with a few pulleys. Just going from the 3.8" stock pulley to a 3.4" nets on average about 25-30 horses. Mike Dye, the GP I posted about being in the mid 12's runs a 2.6" Don't know what his boost is. Since they're leaving the boost at 8, there is plenty of room to bump it up quite a bit in that car.

Just saying that if it is HUGE power you are after (450+ rwhp), the Eaton prolly has to go, along with the IRS.
I just think that in stock form, for a 35+ car it's not exactly the be-all end all of performance and I have a hard time swallowing the fact that a pony car will cost that much.

I gotta throw my two cents in as a long time Mustang owner (I've owned a 65, 66, 77, 95, 97 and 99).
I find it disappointing that it took this long for Ford to come up with something that can beat a Camaro, but Ford has always gone for sales over performance. GM has never ever outsold the Mustang with the Camaro or Firebird.
So now that the Camaro and Firebird are gone, what does Mustang have to compete with? Corvette. But Corvette is going after Viper with the ZO6 and increasing in price. So that leaves a vacuum in the under $50,000 class that Mustang can fill.
Sure you can buy a Z3 or SLK or whatever for that amount, but it goes back to the whole American Muscle Car thing. You can't carry your family around in a Vette or Benz but you can in a Mustang.
There IS a market, and even if it's not on this board, the car WILL sell. Now as for the 390 hp being accurate, they were 10 over in their Bullitt estimate and we all know what happened with the 1999 Cobras.

Another thing to realize, that isn't very expensive for a car that capable... You can NOS our CL to death, headers, intake, Exhaust... you won't beat a Stock SS... It simply won't happen. If the next Cobra will be able to compete with those? Christ... it'll be a hell of a monster... American muscle is tough to beat. It is what it is, a racing machine.

Lets just say that since the Taurus will be paid for next month, I will seriously consider the new Cobra - I always have and this might just be Mustang #7 to grace my luxurious black ass!
May have to throw them the Taurus and the Probe, but if it is doable, and the car is within reason, the Mustang might beat a new CL-S in my next car department.
