2003 MDX NAV with Voice

A factory-installed Acura Navigation System* with Voice Recognition™ is available as an option on the 2003 MDX. It receives Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) data, which is then combined with signals from an onboard inertial guidance system. It then extracts road and destination information from a 48-state database stored on DVD, and pinpoints the vehicle's location. It will also guide you to selected destinations, including your own personal entries. The database now includes 7 million points of interest, and the system includes new voice-recognition software and a built-in microphone. It can recognize more than 60 individual spoken commands. Processing is now faster. Routes within 100 miles which used to take about 18 seconds to prepare now take only five seconds.

As you travel, you can get continuous coverage of the route with both audio and visual cues. The flat 7" color touch control screen can display a moving map that appears three-dimensional, as if seen at an angle from the air. You can zoom in and out. The system will display direction arrows, detailed street names, turning instructions, driving distances, and even your trail should you leave the road. When reverse gear is selected on the MDX equipped with Navigation System, a rearview camera shares the navigation display, showing what's right behind the vehicle.

*Available November 2002
LEAVE THE ROAD

If you go off-road in an area not recorded on the DVD map, the navigation system tracks and records your progress, then displays trail markers, or "bread crumbs," on its screen. When you want to return, just follow the stored path of bread crumbs back the way you came.

REARVIEW CAMERA

A weatherproof rearview camera is equipped on MDX models with both the Touring Package and the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition. From its lens above the rear license plate, it offers the driver a view spanning 115° horizontally and 91° vertically. The driver views the image directly on the navigation screen. It shows objects 13 feet back, directly below, and out beyond the width of the body on both sides. For safety reasons, the camera only functions when the transmission is in Reverse gear.

I am certain the CL will be getting this NAV too. Not sure if it's next year (probably not), but for sure the year after.

My wife and I just picked up our Odyssey EXL with RES ... the head unit is pretty much identical to that one. The display on the right is for the DVD entertainment system controls (track, volume, etc) which can be used in addition to the remote

I can't wait for a good excuse to take a long trip

The new MDX would have been nice, but too small and too expensive for what we needed.

A couple more weeks and we pick up our '03. We ordered the Navigation and RES. How come that article says 60 spoken commands and the brochure says 130? Suposedly you can say something like: Go to the nearest ATM and it will plot a course there. We'll see. I've already read a couple articles saying the voice recognition is spotty.

Why wouldn't Acura use their newest, current Navi in all future models? Why used the old/current one? They better use the newest one!! I'm thinking about upgrading to the 04 if there is one.
