1st gen Talon AWD TSi's

Does anyone have experience with these cars? I'm considering getting one as a project car.........are there any other common problems besides crankwalk? I'm looking for ANY info from maintainence to performance.

Thanks

-Jon

Purely anecdotal evidence, but I worked at a Jeep dealer in 93-94 and Talons were coming frequently enough with engine problems for me to notice.

That's 2nd gen, but I thought I'd mention it.

I have 127K miles on my 2nd gen, and thank God I haven't had no problems what so ever in the 5yrs of owning it! I do take care of it like a baby, but any car will wear down if you don't!

1st gens do not have the crankwalk issue at all, it's the 2nd gens that have to worry, particularly 95'-97'models! As for a 1st gen project car, that would be the primary beast! Plenty of potential if you know what you're doing and where to go!
Good luck!

Timing belts and balance shaft belts, make sure they are good, they have a habit of breaking

Trannys, grinds are common. when looking to replace try to replace with a mid 91 or up tranny (23 spline) but you will need to switch the transfer case as well. Problem is the early 91;s and 90's require a intermediate shaft replacement to rebuild.

02 sensors (recall on 90's)

transfer case leak. Recall

fuel presure reg., gum up, or leak causing boost issues.

Maf, hacked poorly can cause idle issues.

BOV leaks

Inside the doors, where the door switch is rots on most, along with behind lower door panels on exterior of the door.

THeres some, but all easy fix to have a bullet at your hands.

1993 Eagle Talon TSI AWD
It was a hand down from my older brother, then I started modding it!! tints 20% all round, 50% entire windshield, Eibach Sportline springs, K&N intake, KYB's in the corners and BF G-Force KDW's that made me stick like glue to the road!

I miss that car, it was soooooooo much fun, but it was time to move on! Nothing major ever happened to the car, just make sure you do the timing belt!!! and Enjoy!!

If you want to have some real fun, get an 89-92 Mitsu Mirage, Plymouth/Dodge Colt or 1G Hyundai Elantra and swap in a 4G63t motor. I've seen a couple of these at Etown running mid/low 12s....TOTAL SLEEPER.

Don't know about the rest, but the BOV on the 1st gens are one of the best out there! Even the 2nd gens upgrade to them since they DON'T leak! The 2nd gens are the ones that leak after about 15psi!

Lots of 11-12sec Eclipses use the 1st gen BOV!

And CLASSYCLS, that was a tight 1st gen there!

Very true about the 2g bov (actually they are compressor by pass valve)

But the 1g bov(cbv) has been known to leak with boost turned up and even stock levels. The seal on the flange is the problem, not the valve itself (in most cases)

Also the j pipe is known to leak boost, as well as the throtle body shaft seals.

They are very solid cars with proven motors. I had a 90 GSX and currently have a 98 GST with all bolt-ons. The 1st gen motor is a bit more reliable historically but I run my 98 hard and have never had any problems. I have been running about 16psi of boost for more than 20,000 miles with no problems on stock motor.
