1998 M3 or CL Type S??

After talking to the BMW dealer I have almost been convinced to go with a 1998 M3 Coupe which includes a 1.5 year warrenty and then a 2 year 50k warrenty after that.
What do you guys think?
What are the drawbacks to the M3?
Thanks

The only drawback is high maintenance costs. So far no problems with my baby.

Maintenance costs? As the owner of a 99 M3, you should be well aware that all regularly scheduled maintenance is provided at no cost for the first 3 years of ownership, including oil/filter changes.

How long have you had your M3? If you've been paying the dealership for maintenance, you've been getting ripped off.

If you're talking all out performance the M3 has no drawbacks (with the possible exception of slippery road conditions where the Cl's fwd is an advantage).

Isn't the M3 going to be more expensive? I was looking at 98 328IS's and they were within a few G of what I paid for my CL-S, I had to go back to a 95 or thereabouts M3 before it was in the same price range as the Acura.

Speaking of features/luxury items, there are a *lot* of things the CL has that the Bimmer doesn't: 6 disc in dash CD, steering wheel controls for the stereo, tilt down outside RH mirror, auto dimming inside mirror, glass sunroof, memory seats & outside mirrors, HID headlights. Does the one you're looking at have electric, heated seats & cruise? They were optional, I believe.

Then there's the fact that you'd be buying a 2 year old car (at least, depending on delivery date) that has probably been driven pretty hard and must have a few nicks & scratches and wear on it (how many miles does it have on it BTW?).

Having said all that, if I'd been able to buy a '98 M3 (that wasn't totally thrashed) for even a few grand more than a new CL-S I probably would have gone for it .

OK I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE TEST DRIVE, HOLY SHIT!!!
This is most fun I have ever had, I test drove a 1998 M3 Coupe Black on Black with Chrome M3 Wheels, New S02 Pole Position tires, CD Changer, Premium stereo, this baby had everything, With 40K miles, That means with the dealer warranty you get 60K more miles cover. All for $36,900

It drove like a dream even though I hadnt driven a stick in about a year I fit right in with it. WOW.
I think I have decided to go with an M3 rather than a CLS just cause im only 19 so those creature comforts arent too important to me. Plus an M3 would be even better than a CLS when it comes to pimpin the ladies.... Then again my girlfriend might have a problem with that

AC

Any other thoughts, or things I should look out for in the M3??

AC,

I had a ride with co-worker with his loaded 1997 M3 with a stick . I did not like the ride. It was harsh and noisy! My CLS is way nicer on the HW. If you need to auto cross or race daily than M3 is a good option.

Actually, my firend was all the time dreaming of having my CL-S. His tongue once slipped saying" If I can have your car... whatever..." an now with a CAI his more interested....

Go for it, like I said, you won't be sorry. But.......

The price seems a bit high. Hell, I'd sell you my 99 M3 with 10K miles for $37,000. Try to talk them down.

Also, have you checked to see if the car was in any accidents? One sure-fire way to tell is to look at the metal stamped plate on each body panel. If they're original parts, they'll have a white background. If they've been replaced(even with original BMW parts), they'll have a yellow background. Check it out.

If it all checks out, then definitely buy it, you'll be smiling ear to ear every time you drive it.

All of u guys say u love your M3s but at the drop of some 30 grand, u all want to see them. U guys are messed up. What would u do then, tom already has a cl-s so he has the best of both worlds, but maddogtx, u have a phat dinen stage 2m3, why get rid of it. How many horses u pumpin now? I love the M3 but i think the ladies, especially my gf love my cl-s better then bmw, its slightly larger and much more room to make out. Especially with the memeory buttons, #2 has become my BJ position.

hey malakas,

I don't want the new M3. Actually, I would only sell my car for a profit to put a down payment on a M5. The CL-S is a beautiful car, but don't mess w/ the M3. As far as cabin space in concerned I prefer to mess around in my house. I don't think it's smart to buy a car you can't afford and end up living in it.

Good points by all, but I gotta say im leaning toward the M3, plus making out in a car is soo highschool, thats what my condo is for
AC
I just like the M3,
Pros: Better resale, warranty up to 100K, Fast, Fun to drive, A real Sports Car!
Cons: Small, Expensive to fix (after warranty ends) not as equipt.

CL-S
Pros: New, Fast, Fun car to drive but lacks RWD exsitement, Lots of Goodies.
Cons: Cheeper construction, doesnt hold value as well, no manual!

IM SERIOUS......

if you like a the used M3 --> take it to a good mechanic and have him send the engine, trans, rear-end, and other fluids to an analysis service

like the taxi fleets, cop maint., etc do

You will find out if the car has been thrashed

also, have a full leak-down/compression test to check on the state of the pistons, rings, valves, valve seats, and other bits.

If it looks really good on all tests -- your a winner

If it comes back bad -- you just bought some body elses trouble.

Wait for the new kick-ass m3 or get a really well taken care of m3

OR get a NEW CL-S off the truck

I agree, but I will only buy an M3 from a Dealer, I went to BMW of Bellevue, Very well know and might be one of the largest dealers just cause of Microsoft being right there. They do all that (supposedly) then tack on a 50K 2 year warranty that takes effect after the stock one runs out. So with that M3 its smooth sailing up to 100K at least... But I better check and make sure they do all that engine checkin stuff, but I bet they do.
