180 miles per tank

I would like to start off saying hello to all my fellow CL owner's, just purchased a used 03' CL-S ABP w/ 95,000 miles.

Just finished with my first full tank of gas, at the 180 miles mark, my gas light turned on. My question is, does the 180 miles per tank sound about right to you guys. My driving mainly city with constant stop & go.

Does anybody have any recomendations as far as maintenance to get better gas mileage. TIA.

have you done a tune up or anything. I get that with still a quarter tank to go in the city and if I drive highway I get about 320 miles to the tank.. these are things that could help your mileage:
1. stop gunning it from light to light
2. oil change
3. spark plugs
4. air filter dirty
5. fuel filter (maybe?)
6. Check to see if your ecu is throwing some codes

Besides your basic tune up, the basic bolts will help out with gas mileage I/H.

being that i am from San Fracnisco, all these hills and stop sign & lights doesn't really help. With our whether, a/c is never on.

A mechanic friend on mines suggested some type of fuel injection cleaner, does anyone have any input and which brand would be recommened.

Welcome!
Check out the FAQ...

The fuel filter is part of the in tank fuel pump. It's not replaceable as you'd have to replace the fuel pump in the tank.

Clean your TB
Clean you IAC valve
Check your tires pressures
And your using 91/93 gas right?

thanks Fuzzy.

thats what i assumed with the fuel filter. A friend did also suggest cleaning the TB, tires pressures are all good. As far as gas goes, previous owner mentioned he ran 89, i pumped 76 with 91 octane.

Miles until the light comes on is not an accurate measurement.

Fill the tank and zero the odo. Next time you get gas calculate the actual mpg.

Could just be a one time thing... The last owner probably drove differently than you, so it might take a few days for the ecu to readjust to your driving style... Could have been a bad tank of gas, or maybe you didn't fill it up all the way...

I've got a heavy foot, and I usually get over 300 miles when the light comes on... I usually get 280 or so with an 1/8 of a tank left...

it may be the fuel guage..you might have an extra 4-5 gallons left when its on empty...which can make about 70-100 miles diffrence...now in my 97...my fuel guage goes on empty when i have 6 gallons left!! LOL

Look, I have a 2003 CL 6MT, Super charged or not, I got the same thing, 180-220 miles per tank, I don't drive hard too much, but I do open her up a few times here and there. It really also depends on where you live, I know my city (Yonkers, NY) is AAAALLLLLLLLL Hills, and I live on the highest point in the city, I can see the GW bridge and the empire state building from my roof.

I also do mostly city driving. I drove long distance a few times and got like 300+ miles to the tank, but that was all highway.

I also had the same numbers on my old 2001 CL-S auto.

Average 23.84 mpg last tank - mostly just driving easy and a good amount of highway

I know its not an accurate gauge but at the halfway mark i usually get at least 180 miles (to upwards of 200)

I still cant beleive how well this car does on the highway (avg 29.XX mpg, all highway cruise set at 70mph with A/C on)

All said, 180 miles to the tank does not sound right

91 Octane is the minimum

If the old owner was using 89 octane thats no good, Our engines are a high output and need the extra octane to push. Maybe he was trying to save money, maybe he shouldn't have had a high quality Acura.

Anyways always put High Octane in the ride. I know I need a tune up, even with High Octane I still ping a little on hills.

I have an 03 6 spd. Driving nearly all expressway and skipping gears - I get 400+ miles to the tank on garbage Kentucky reforumlated ethanonl 93 gas.

The gas light if I'm not mistaken, means you've got 3 gallons left. My gas light normally kicks on around the 370+ mile mark.

If you're only getting 180 - you've got something majorly wrong.

I suggest running a double cycle of lucas upper cylinder lubricant / injector cleaner through the next tank of 93 or better octane gas.

Flush your cooling system and rebalance it with Zerex or Prestone

Those auto trans - new HONDA ATF fluid every 35k - this is my 5th Honda V6 vehicle - and I haven't ever had trans issues - even with my previous CL.

Spend the money on the denso platinum plugs and replace all 6 if this hasn't been done in the last 30k.

Reset your ECU.

Drive.

I got 415 on a tank, on a drive from Detroit to Chi-town with mild traffic leaving the city, and many 7k shifts, crusing at 85-105. Something is def off. Do the all around tune up, and see if it changes.
