$3K budget - best mods to do???

Hey all, just got a black/black CLS in NYC and wanted to get everyone's opinion on what the best mods to get done if you had 3K to burn. I'm not really looking for performance (since 260 is enough for now - just got it).

Here's what I had in mind to start: rims(back wheels are like bike tires - too damn thin!), the setup to get DVD/tv on the nav screen, and exhaust.

I really don't know where to begin, and this my first day here. I would appreciate if you guys could let me know:
1) what are the popular rims for the CLS (and how much they are)
2) what are the popular exhausts for the CLS (and how much they are). I don't need something too loud like on most honda civics, just a deep groul that you can hear while driving.
3) where i can go to get info and parts on setting up the nav screen for tv/dvd.
4) anything else that is a "must have?"

So, is it all possible under 3K? I saved up to get this car and 3K is all i can spare.

sorry if this has been discussed - if so please point me to the thread.

Thanks for any info guys. I'm gonna take her for a spin.

suspension is am ust have for this car... springs/sways... that's what I'm about to get first... exhausts are kind of annoying in my opinion... I'd just drop it a bit, get some nice 18s, and redo the system... that shuld top you over 3K arleady...

Performance or not, id get the headers and CAI for sound, CT springs and sway, and then the rest on rims. Save another 3K and do the stereo.

If you're going for looks, this is what I suggest:
Springs: about $300
Nice 18" rims: $2000
Tints: $200
exhaust: $350-500

get the sounds and everything else later on........

thanks for the replies so far:

I think i'll do suspension in the second 3K round (in a few months). (you're right this car does need it though - different ride than the bmw). I was looking at some wheels in the meantime, what do you guys think of teh OZ Superleggera III.

On an M5:

Close up:

Tirerack has em for $350 a wheel - not too bad.

Oh, anyone knwo how to do that DVD/tv mod to the nav?

Try TypeSdragoon...but be forewarned...the parts required to do it are no discountinued (Pioneer AGB-RGB1 and the Sony Switch, if you choose to use this method as opposed to the FM modulator). A few people may still have one or two, but the price has increased by 200%. The RGB used to sell for only $125 and now people are fetching as high as $300-$500 for it. Aftermarket monitor maybe the better way to go. Don't mess with the Navi, get the Alpine monitor and use your Navi purely dedicated for Navi.

260 or not, you should still consider the headers Sways, Intake, springs, struts and upgraded rubber are next. Welcome and good luck.

You might want to consider upping the alarm too. Adding on to it or whatever. Something to think about...The last thing you want is someone easily breaking into your ride after putting some K's into it.

I say go with some 19s and Tein coilovers. That'll be the best enhancement to the car's appearance.

Get the sways. You'll love them. Don't help with looks though, but, voiala, no more understeer.
Looks do 18x8 rims. wheelmax has great prices and selection but terrible customer service.
Drop the ride 1-1.5" and you'll be so happy with your new look.
ENJOY!

I'd say get some
springs $170 for H&R sports
shocks $around 400
sways
and some nice aftermarket rims.

thanks again for the replies everyone. can someone explain the difference between springs, shocks, and coilovers. Seems like they all lower the car in some way - so what's the difference?

Also, does lowering the car also solve handling and steering problems (understeer)?

thanks.

Get the real xenon filled bulbs. It'll be the best money you spend.

This is a spring:

Don't have a pic of a shock...

And here's a pic of a true coilover:

To a certain degree lowering can make the understeer less noticeable, but sways bars would help. Lowering definitely improves handling for sure. The lower the better, but two low causes problems with daily driving.

I could probably get you into a decent hydraulic setup for a little under 3k. That would be the best mod in my opinion.
