Nitrogen filled tires

Just took delivery of an 06 TSX Glacier Blue with Graphite interior. Any thoughts about using nitrogen filled tires?

Do a search for this. It's been covered many times. Honda recommends that you use normal air. Plus, there's no real need or benefit for nitrogen.

I think Costco uses this to fill tires too. It's suppose to be better

Its been said before, but since air is 78% nitrogen... paying for a nitrogen fill is kinda a ripoff. I've yet to see anything scientific as to why nitrogen fills are significantly superior to good ol' air, theories aside.

Also, there's no such thing as a 'graphite' interior, I believe you mean either Quartz (gray) or Ebony (black).

Welcome to the forums!

To me, the advantages are not worth the cost.

the main advantage is that nitrogen is slower to leak over the long term and pressure fluctuates less than regular air.

but if you check and adjust your pressures monthly (i do it everytime i wash my car), then there's no really advantage.

Do a search on this. There was a thread that included an Acura tech newsletter where it is said that it doesn't offer significant improvement over regular air, and wouldn't be worth it!

Why would this be true? O2 is larger and heavier (slightly) than N2, so without more data I would think N2 would almost leak out slightly faster.

The main benefit to using nitrogen is not the nitrogen itself but the lack of oxygen, which permeates through the rubber and can cause belt oxidation.

Another benefit to using nitrogen inflation is the fact that it is pure. Compressed air is oxygen + nitrogen + water vapor + everything else (this air is typically not dried). Again, the issue is oxidation of the belts, which is accelerated by the water present.

That being said, the benefits are small, and are only really relevant in long-life tires (like for big rigs). There may be a very small advantage for some 80k mile tires, but surely almost none for the 40k mile tire more typically used by members of this forum.

Bottom line: Nice to have, but probably not worth paying extra for.

i like bottled water... and nitrogen isnt that expensive ($7.50 per tire)... not to mention if its going to prolong the life of my expensive tires than its worth it

But the molecule is larger.

Nitrogen is more stable and will not increase in pressure as your tires heat up, so as you drive on longer trips, your ride will stay more consistent. Additionally, nitrogen is much less likely to permeate through the tires, thus eliminating the need to check air pressure regularly.

Because pure nitrogen contains no moisture, filling tires mounted on chrome wheels has added benefits: no moisture means no corrosion, so you can rest assured that your wheel and tire investment will give you many years of trouble free service...

its not about the ride its about protecting your investment and saving yourself some hassle

Fifteen years ago, a showroom stock Porsche mechanic I knew suggested I tell a friend in a competing Nissan, who was complaining about changing tire performance, to use nitrogen; their cars raced together, in different classes, and their budgets for everything were completely different.

Over a 15 year period preceding that comment, my father's various Porsches constantly had slow leak problems right from the start of the introduction of the original 50 series Pirelli P7 on. The Porsche dealer, whose mechanic told me about nitrogen, NEVER suggested using nitrogen - which I guess I should be happy about because my father would give me the keys and just ask me to fill up the tires.

I'd rather light a small fire with that money. You would get about the same use out of it...

I remember hearing somewhere before that most nitrogen pumps can only filter to approx 80-85% purity, therefore its not much higher than standard air (that being approx 78%). I think the better machines can get to around 95-98% purity, but I can't remember exactly.

thats from the website of the best wheel place in atlanta (and being atlanta where wheels are in enormous demand that says a lot), therefore it cant be too far from the truth. i get free refills of nitrogen for life after the intial fee so i deem it worth it. everyone has their opinions im just throwing out there what i know. if a good machine can get 95-98% and it will help prevent corrosion of my tires its worth it... i dont know about yall but the way i drive my tires they need all the help they can get (nothing like a nice e-brake skid in a tsx)

Don't listen to sales people. Their job is to sell, and that's it. Most of the people on this board would know more about the subject than the typical salesman.

As for filling with nitrogen. I would probably try it after I get bigger aftermarket rims especially since I've always experienced a sizeable difference in the ride when the tire pressure fluctuated due to temperature.

If the technology is available, and you can afford it, then why not?

It WILL increase in pressure as the tire heats up.

Well, that makes sense. Tire shops are known for their scientific research.

They are trying to get people to buy nitrogen from them. But if you get free refills andthe nitrogen is 98% or purer, then it's all good.
