Lowering without shocks
Lowering without shocks
Hi all,
I have heard that you can lower your car a certain amount without needing new shocks. Once you lower to much you need new shocks as the stock ones are to big and cause the ride to be ruff and the shocks to bottom out.
I was wondering if anyone knows how much you can lower a TSX without needing to change the standard shocks.
Could you lower the car 1.5 inchs all round?

I have been on Neuspeed Sport springs for almost 15,000-20,000 miles. My shocks have held up fine, contrary to what everyone on here seems to think. While it's true that slamming the car on race springs will be the end of your shocks, I don't think the same thing is true with a mild lowering spring.
I have been using the Eibach pro-kit for roughly 12000 miles now and I still think they are great. The most extreme set of springs I would use without getting new shocks is the Eibach Sportline kit which drops you almost 2 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the back. The pro-kit drops the car 1.5 in front and and 1.4 in the rear.
IMO it depends on how many miles are already on your struts...I have nearly 50k after 4 years of ownership, so it would be illogical for me to buy springs knowing that I would have to get my shocks replaced very soon after, so I decided to buy a coilover set. If you only have 10-20k on your OD then springs would make more sense (Tein H/S tech are great!)
I have to assume that you're going strictly for looks... because anyone who has ever ridden in a car on lowering springs and stock shocks knows that it doesn't handle ANYWHERE near as well as on a set of coilovers. Since aftermarket springs aren't matched to the stock shocks, the shocks don't properly dampen when the suspension compresses, and you end up with a "bouncier" ride, rather than one that's more firm and controlled. In Florida, one may not see the effects as quickly since the majority of roads are smooth and flat. There's a reason why even the OEM A-Spec suspension has a different set of shocks to accompany the very modest ~1 inch spring drop. IMO, you either do it right, or you save up until you can.

I've been on Comptech 110-155s for so many miles I can't remember, I know at least 35k miles. Basically a 1" drop all around and the shocks are fine. Amadeus303 is right about the coilovers, but I have a good mix IMHO. Think of it this way, if you are going to get shocks some day, just wait and get the coilovers when the $$ comes in. I have no intention of getting new shocks unless these give out. Then I might consider a set of Koni's.
