Help me narrow down my list: Avon, Pirelli, & Yokohama oh my!

Just about at 30,000 miles and my stock Michelin's look like crap, so it's time to get new tires, wooo!

Only problem is, I'm very indecisive, and there are a lot of good tires out there it'd seem.

My driving style is pretty aggressive, so handling is most important, followed by tread life (hopefully I can get at least 30k miles out of all of these), and lastly tire noise, as i usually have the music up loud enough for tire noise not to be an issue.

So here's my list of UHP tires:
Avon Tech M550
Pirelli PZero Nero M&S
Yokohama Advan Sport S.4

thanks for any input

Avon for price and weight, Yokohama for treadwear (which we all know is subjective). Just do 1 simple thing... go to TireRack, open a spreadsheet and copy the specs in the spreadsheet with pricing included. I do this all the time. It is very helpful for the indecisive types.

I've had the Avon M550's and Pirelli M+S and I vote the Avon's, those are great all-seasons!

Oooh, someone that's had both. Can you elaborate on why you like the Avon more?

good grip, quiet and didn't tramline. I had the Avons on a different car, but still liked them quite a bit. They're much cheaper too.

I do the same thing, did it when buying summer tires. It helps see all the different factors side-by-side, you can mess with them, and see what jumps out at you as a decision-making factor. FWIW, I have the Avons -- grip is above-avg in dry, way above-avg in wet, and avg. in snow. They're about avg. noise and very comfortable riding. They do flat-spot overnight, takes a mile or two to wring that out and it's not bothersome, but it's noticeable if you're paying attention.

I think the Avons are about $25/tire cheaper, 2 lbs heavier (215/50 vs. 225/45 for Pirellis), and rated higher by Tire Rack's customers.

yeah the 27Lb of the Avon in 225/45/17 is giving me a slight bit of pause. The pirelli's are out of the running ..

i wish there was more info on those Yokohamas..

The Avon 215/50 is 25 lbs, still a couple lbs heavier than stock. I didn't notice any effect on performance, rule of thumb w.r.t. tire weight is multiply by 2 to get effect on acceleration. 2lbs. x 2 x 4 tires = 16 lbs, the equivalent of driving around with a couple sacks of groceries.

I think right now i'm leaning towards Yokohama .. only cause the treadwear rating is a bit better, they're slightly lighter, and one of the user reviews on TireRack was from a Maxima driver who went from Avon M550's to the Yoko Advan S4, and prefered the Yoko.

i'm gunna wait until sunday or order since the tires wont ship out till monday anyway. This'll give me a couple nights to sleep on it and get more feedback

Between the Avon and Yoko tires, a deciding factor for me was availablity and service. Could I buy them from a national dealer with repairs/replacement available to me within hours vs. days. I went with the Yoko tires. Correct me if I'm wrong but the S4's do not come in the TSX OEM size, only 225/45/17. I went with the V4S and 215/50/17.

I was planning on upsizing though .. 225/45/17 will fit. The optional OEM tires from Acura were Yokohama AVS ES100 in 225/45/17.

Understood. What it came down to for me was the speedo issue and the increased cost. I will be curious as to what you have to say about the S4 after a few K's of miles. I was REALLY tempted to go that route. Keep us informed.
