I live in Maine. I run steelies in the winter on Passat, alloys in the summer. TireRack.com can set you up with a backup set of wheels with mounted snow tires. That's probably what I'll do when I buy my TSX (hopefully in the near future)
Bridgestone Blizzaks and Michelin Artic alpins are good. I have Dunlap Graspics. They're pretty good as well.

I have 17" Toyo Proxes on 2003 CL-S wheels. The tires perform well on dry roads (not noisy - stable to 200 km/h) , wet, slushy and fresh snow. They do not perform much better than stock tires on hard pack or icy conditions. The tires are directional as well have lots of sipage and a good tread pattern. I believe the poor performance on ice is due to the fact that I stuck with the factory size of 215/55/17. The tires are just to wide. I didn't care for the look of steels and my Acura dealer gave me an excellent price on the package as the CL-S was gone and they had a lot of clients who upgraded the stock wheels. I do feel more confident in my winter driving.
If I had to do it over; I would have kept my stock wheels for snows and bought an 18 or 19" summer package, going to 16's wasn't an option for me, but you would get much better perforamnce if you did. I might suggest the Nokian Haakapalitta Q's (Awesome winter performance) in a 16, they don't make 17's.

First due a search there are a lot of threads about this already.
But quickly to recap, yes snows make an improvement, a HUGE improvement for winter conditions. Go to 16" and run a 205/60R16, from all of my winter tire experience there is Nokian and then there is everyone else and in that order. Studless go with the RSi or studded the Hakka. 2(if you live outside north america or can wait till next year the Hakka. 4 is significantly better then the 2). They no longer make Hakka. Q's(well they do but only in odd, 13 and 14" sizes). If you want to use the stock size you can go down to a 205/50R17 RSi or if you prefer slightly better handling in the dry you can use a 215/50R17 WR(nokian's all weather tire) there are plenty of other winter tire options, I just happen to feel nokian's are by a large margin the BEST tires available for winter driving.
I am a nokian dealer but I also represent Bridgestone, Goodyear, Dunlop, Firestone, Michelin and BFGoodrich. The tires on MY car's and my friends and families cars are Nokian's in winter no substitute.
