I hear a slight whistling or whining sound from the engine as the revs increase. Its sounded like this since day 1. Just wondering if its just the normal sound this engine makes or if I should talk to my dealer about it.

Anyone else hear this? Thanks.

There is a whistling sound. I hear it when the car is in idle (stopped). Goes away as I pick up speed. Been like that from day one.

It's looking like FDL might have it.

Hmm...I don't hear anything to that nature. It's been pretty quiet free so far for the past three months. I'll keep my ears open more to see if I have this whining sound too.

Its hard to explain the sound. Its just as the engine revs..there is a slight whistle or whine to it. you need the radio off, windows up to hear it.

It's like when you have a cold ... nose stuffed. You blow hard, and get a little air through .... kinda like a whistle... that's the sound.

Does that sound right?

Thats a very interesting description BUt I guess thats it. Its mixed in with what i would call "normal" engine revving sound. BUt in the background i hear this..weezing. and it gets louder..and maybe higher as you rev up. again..the sound has always been there so if it weas a problem i would assume the dealer would have noticed. but i will still mention it.

FDL ...

Yup, I agree .. it's embedded into the revs.

fdl... that's exactly the sound that i have as well. i was worried about it... but to know that you also have it, makes me feel better.

on my test drive, i test drove the AT and not the MT... that could be a reason for it.

also, i think its more a sound from the intake... like air being sucked in on top of the engine reving noise. however, i do believe its the air being sucked in... does it sound like that?

I test drove both the MT and the AT .... up to 1 hour each. I do not recall this sound on either.

FDL... let me know what the dealer says.. Tks.

Are you sure it's not your $300 add-on turbo sound generator that's doing its job???

I thought I heard whistling sound couple weeks ago, at that time it sounded like a pin hole in the firewall or left front fender, but I did not hear it again.

Maybe whistling is not the right word. More like a high pitched hissing..or weezing. I guess it sounds like a turbo

Maybe its the intake ... but i am thinking it is something thats specific to the 6MT.

I have heard of the same whistling sound you describe. I don't hear it as much anymore though (I have close to 1000 miles on the car)

I heard a similar noise on my Integra once and took it to the dealer. They said it was coming from the intake snorkel or something like that.

i can hear it on my 5At as well, report a while ago at club.. someone suggest it wastorque convertor, but if 6MT has it, then it can be the intake.. the noise is very audible at 1800-2800rpm, 1-2 minutes after driving. shall i concern???

This weezing sound is normal. All H22A dohc VTEC Preludes have it too. So do VTEC Accords. Pull the intake tube from the air filter and take a quick trip around the block, the weez will be really loud.

The noise is air being sucked through the intake and factory intake resonator very hard. Hence why revs bring it on. At revs the K24A is really sucking air hard. If you pull the rubber intake tube from the air box you bypass the reasonator/silencer in the fender well. Thus you hear the noise. You may even hear this noise when you shut off the car too. Installing an AEM cold air intake will also increase, dramatically, this weezing noise.

Interestingly enough, my 01 Accord does not have this noise.

disconect the intake tube from the TB and you will.

or

Remove the resonator from behind the fender well and you will.

The F23A doesn't suck in air hard enough to make the noise in 100% stock trim. Nor does the J30A - V6 model.

another concern...

i just recently got past 1000 miles on my car, so i've been slowly increasing my rpm/mph. when i hit 80 mph in 6th gear, i hear a faint, very faint, noise on my passenger side. i don't know how to describe it... but it only sounds at 80mph (haven't gone above that), and the sound will go away at like 76mph.

wondering if anyone else has noticed anything. however, like i said, its very faint and i don't know how to describe it.

i see, so no sound from F23A and V6 on 03 Accord because both SOHC vtec... not DOHC...

what is your RPM? i got this noise at 1800-2800 RPM, speed soes not matter...

rpm was prolly around 3500 in 6th (going 80). this is only speed dependent as i only hear it when i'm at 80.

The US domestic market Accord has a hugely restrictive intake 98-02 and I would imagine '03 aswell. The downside to this is you loose 3-4hp with this in place. The upside is the engine is super quiet and you never here any noise or vibration of air over the TB and intake manifold.

looking at the engine bay one would assume an F23A sohc VTEC eninge is sucking air through this ~6"x 9" air box right?

This is what sets under the airbox in the fender well.

This chamber really quiets the engine, but is heavily restrictive.

Higher performance cars like the Prelude, Integra type-R, and such (TSX?) generally have less restrictive intake systems that allow more of the whistle sound to come through but still mute the intake runner vibration effect.

The only way to really know if this whistle is your engines natural sound would be to pull the intake tube either at the filter box or the TB and drive around the block and listen for the noise. If its the same noise only louder, the whistle is natural to the engine.

thank you MrChad!!! when i saw your picts i started to miss my 95 Accord a little(same layout... miss the tail spin/drift thing), traded in for TSX. thanks for the advise, i don't mind little whizzing sound, as long as it does not point to trouble!! and i believe it is the air intake that is making the sound(i had very good ears )
funny thing is that whizzing is at partial throattle, not full.... strange!!

Most of this engine talk is over my head, but I just wanted to mention that I've had the "whistle" since day 1 too. I only hear it when I'm at idle because it's not very loud, but at first I thought it was a small air leak in one of the front windows or something. It doesn't bother me, and I don't even notice any more, but I'm glad to know it's probably "normal"

You can have the whistle at part throttle. What you really need to do is yank the resonator box. Drive around. Once you hear all the noise veriation in the engine you really understand how the TB works to modulate flow. You can even hear the Intake manifold switch runners if it is a dual runner design. No reasonator box is a wonderful thing.
