Whining noise from engine after 10K service. Please Help!!!
Hi all,
My 2005 TSX 6MT had 10K service yesterday. After the service I hear new whining noise when the car is idle. It is loud enough that catches my attention.
I took the car back to the dealer today. They looked at the car for 15 min. and concluded that it is normal as they compared the sound with another TSX. In my opinion, something is wrong.
The noise seems to come from the engine block (see picture), but I am not 100% sure.
Please listen to the video clip and comment. (what you hear is not background noise, it is THE noise)

If you have similar experience or any comment, please reply and let me know of the solution.
Thanks a lot!

Maybe they installed a supercharger without you knowing?
I can't view the video at work but will when I get home. How different is the noise from before the 10k service?

Please take a look at the clip. You should be able to hear the sound pretty obviously at ~40second of the clip out of 1:02.
If possible, please compare with your TSX and let me know.
Thanks!

I am 200% sure I have never heard of the noise before 10k service. Workdone from what I know / could see.
1) changed from dyno oil to Mobile1 synthetic EP 5w-30
2) changed honda oil filter
3) topped off windshield fluid (really topped off.... you can see the clip.... I cannot believe that I have windshield fluid all around the engine compartment now.
4) Added a little bit of steering fluild (It is sitting at max now..... not raise a flag to me yet..... ) I hope it is not doing anything to the power steering pump .... there is no oil pressure, I guess this is not where it causes the noise.
5) Tire rotation....
6) All the inspections .... etc .....
yes, I paid them $140 for this turbo charger....

Yes, the valve tap has been there since day one. (I think it is typical Honda 4-cyl sound).
I thought it was the belt at the beginning, but the source does not seem to come from there. I could hear the sound from belt, but it is not the whining sound.

Pretty sure I haven't heard valve tap like that before on my TSX (pre or post valve adjustment by the dealer).
As for the low-pitch whine -- no idea. That is odd. Might be a bearing for one of the accessories (alternator, PS pump, etc.)? As JTso says, maybe the serpentine belt wearing down or going out of spec on tension, is causing some kind of harmonic / resonance?

Might be a whiny accessory bearing. I have that whine too, but it's from the power steering pump up the top. Can't hear it from the inside though. The only whine i get from the inside is the high pitched whistling sound.

Pizzaman,
How about this clip, it should be more obvious.

It is like a whistle in the engine.

fadinglionhart. It does not sound right. It sounds like a hair dryer at 800rpm. "Wooooo"... I hope it is not the power steering...
BTW, which year is your TSX and how many miles you have?

Wow, that whining sound is loud. Compared to mine, mine's not that bad.

Compare with yours, mine sounds like a jet engine.
The service rep. claims it is normal and as another TSX. If they don't acknowledge the problem, they won't do anything about it....

Noise comes from thing that spins. So:
I would try a number of things to see:
1) Turn on and off the AC to see if it is the AC clutch.
2) Turn on and off the head light to put a load to the alternator to see if it is the alternator.
3) check to see if it is coming from the tensioner.
4) check to see if there is any engine oil.
5) check to see if there is any transmission oil.
6) put the car in first gear to put a load to the engine and transmission
7) check to see if there is any oil in the coolant.
8) check to see if your milage is changed
9) check to see if you have a loose part.

bz268, thanks for the suggestions!
Also, aaronng, your video clip really helps!
- AC, I have tried, not much help
- headlight, I need to try
- there is engine oil (just changed and checked)
- mileage, I know... look at the trip computer will kind of tell.... I think it is lower... but I need to run the car longer to confirm .....
Oil in the coolant.... how do I check?
One thing I notice is.... the power steering fluid is a little above max. I could see the power steering fluid shaking when the car is running. I am going to suck some of it out of the tank and see what happen...
