VSA Modulator/Air in brake lines
Hello, new here:
Have a 2004 TSX, great car, previously owned, purchased in summer of 2008. Earlier this year, the brakes started going soft and I took it in to Firestone and they said it needed a new master cylinder, which they replaced. Little by little, the brakes started going soft again, so they replaced the brake pads. Same thing. Have had them bled 4 times.
Found out a tech bulletin had been issued in 2007 about the VSA modulator allowing air to get into the brake lines, thus causing this issue.
Evidently, a new modulator costs $1,600 (!) and labor is being quoted at anywhere from $500 - $700, and it's not covered by warranty.
Strapped for cash, big time, due to job loss and medical issues. Acura won't do goodwill repairs unless you have a consistent service relationship with them, which I don't.
I have found a modulator at a spare parts place locally for $125.
My husband has always taken care of these things, but he is quite ill right now and simply cannot do anything like this, so I'm trying to figure out what to do.
What I'm asking you guys is:
(a) if anyone here has had this issue with the mod and brakes
(b) did you do the repair yourself and how difficult is it
(c) what do you think of using a part at that much of a reduced price
I just love this car, but I'm getting more and more nervous when I'm out, especially in heavy traffic.
Sure would appreciate your feedback/help. Thanks.
