Too Much Oil ?
Had an oil change - just regular dino oil - yesterday.
Checked oil level when I got home.
Red line marks the oil level.
Is it too much oil ?

Just how much (at what level) is too much ?
How does too much oil damage the motor ?
thx

umm.... the only time I've seen oil get up that high on my TSX is when the car is running. AFAIK, you should only have it just hitting the "UPPER MARK". On my previous Accord, too much oil was put in and the car would not start, had to drain a litre or so to get it to start.

FOR THE LAST FREAKING TIME.
DONT HAVE SOME STUPID AS* KID WHO DOESNT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOUR CAR, AND MAKES 6 BUCKS A HOUR REGARDLESS OF HOW MAN OIL CHANGES HE DOES CHANGE YOUR OIL. TIME AND TIME AGAIN I ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT THESE RETARDs MESSING SOMETHING UP. Last year on my old car i took it in for a coolant flush and they ran antifreeze into my turbo hose. Years before that I ve taken a old truck in for a lube job and they hit about 5 of the 15 lube ports there was on the old truck. My mother took her car in once to have a oil change and they didnt retighten the oil drain plug and it all leaked out.
THEY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR....SO QUIT BEING A LAZY RETARD AND CHANGE IT YOURSELF. If not take it to the dealer and pay them to rape you...atleast that way the person doign it should know something about your car.

Relax man, not everyone can change the oil in their own car. Many people live in condos that don't allow that sort of thing.
Yes it sucks that they overfilled the oil, but it can be fixed.
Definately don't run it w/ that much oil - it can harm the oil pump.
Did you let it sit for ~20 minutes after shutting it off, before checking the oil? If not, do so, and check again.
If the level is still that high, call the shop that changed it and get them to make it up to you (money back + free PROPER oil change this time).

So it is too much at that level ?
Can the excess be siphoned out or pumped out ?
Do they sell some tool at auto part shop to do that ?

Nice attitude. It's a good thing you're 23 years old. I wouldn't want to confuse you with "SOME STUPID AS* KID". Perhaps others don't WANT to change there own oil. I used to do it myself (15-20 yrs ago). It's a pain in the ass. Finding a decent service place is definatelyt easier than lugging that crap around. Chill out my friend, life's too short to get your panties in a bunch over stuff like this.

yes they sell siphon's at autoparts stores and btw I'd check if they even bothered to change the filter, because they may have forgotten and double filled your car with oil again
I mark my filters sometimes to make sure they bother to change it
I used to change my own oil but I dont feel like getting under the car anymore, I'm just lazy, plus you have to remove that shield, bah, I'm just paying acura to change it and put in some mobil 1

arrgh, f^ck it ! I will probly take it back to my local dealer to get it re-done.
Lesson learned: NEVER ever have *any* service work done at a location that's too much trouble for you to take the car back to !
If you can't take it back to them to do it right (you said the dealership who changed it is in another town), I'd say chalk it up to a bad experience and take it somewhere local. Check it before you leave. I'm guessing if you don't change your own oil (no, it doesn't make you a retard), you don't have the pan, jack, stands, etc to drain a little out which would also be a real mess. It's $20 (or so), if you have to do it again that's the way it is. My brother just did the same thing in his Accord (changed it himself, wasn't paying attention, overfilled it) and after hemming and hawing about wasting perfectly good oil, I convinced him it's a few bucks worth of oil, not worth damaging your engine.
To the jerk-off throwing around the word "retard", I will say that I've worked with retarded adults and children (my son is in special education) and one thing I've observed is that their problems go a long way beyond being able to change their own oil or even own their own car. Still, they're typically happy people who suffer from few afflictions of morals or judgment, which is a lot more than I can presume about an obvious asshole like you. You're a shame to this forum, and I'll wager you're a B-side big mouth on the rugby pitch as well.

well I thought since we ALL have the same oil stick.....
Pic here:
That's it? Then you don't need to do anything. Just drive it normally and monitor the level. Keep in mind as soon as the engine is running, the level will be much lower than that. You won't hurt anything.

Yeah by the looks of the first pic (the book), you were like 1 - 1.5L overfilled. By the looks of the actual dipstick picture, you're maybe 300mL overfilled --- No big deal.
Run it at redline for a bit and that'll be down to the top dot in no time! (At least in my car.

Now just curious, does anyone know just how much oil in total does it take for the level to reach the crankshaft ?
'Cause cartalk.com had this to say on hi oil level:
"But too much oil can be bad, too. If the oil level gets high enough so that it touches the crankshaft, the oil will get whipped into a foam, kind of like the filling in a lemon meringue pie.
And the big problem with foamy oil is that the oil pump can't pump it. It's like sucking on a straw after you've finished a drink. What you get is mostly air. And air doesn't lubricate engines."

I agree with that guy who doesn't trust mechanics. In fact, every time I go to the dealer they put too much oil. I've got two free oil changes coming. I know that they will both overfill and put in 5/20. I ALREADY KNOW! They don't give two rats about me or my car.
Learn to change the oil and filter yourself. I know this is tough for some people based on their living situations. Buy a bunch of filters from Honda and do it.
You have TOO much oil. I hope you checked the oil after 20 minutes of the engine being off otherwise your readings are inaccurate. Drain the excess. Why should you have more oil in the crankcase if you don't need it. Tell the dealer off!
I don't think you'll cause damage with about 4-500 mls. more but you will cause unnecessary extra stress which will reduce efficiency. Just watch you gas mileage, you'll see.

OK I'm bringing this thread back from the dead. Last night driving home, my check engine light ("malfunction indicator lamp") came on just after I pulled away from a stop sign, and its been on ever since. My car is a 2004 CG/Quartz 6-sp non-navi. I have a Comptech Icebox (since 29767 miles). I recently changed my oil at 47038 miles. The car currently has 48182 miles.
I checked under the hood to look for anything obvious, blown lines, disconnected wires, etc that could be causing the CEL (i'm not an Acura mechanic). While I was in there I checked the oil and found that my oil level was just about where the fellow above posted the picture of his oil level. I checked my level when I was finished with the oil change and I thought I didn't overfill but I guess I did a bit.
Maybe I'm trying to make a connection that doesn't exist here -- but what are the chances that this slight overfill caused the CEL? I'm thinking of trying to take some oil out tomorrow, but based on what JTso and others said above, I am now considering not bothering. Keep in mind about 1000 miles elapsed between the oil change and the CEL going on.
The car runs like it always has as far as I can tell -- that is to say, strong and smooth.
If it doesn't go away within a few days -- owner's manual recommends tightening gas cap and driving around for 3 days -- I will bring it to the dealer. Luckily I am still in warrenty. Have to go in anyway for the headlight seal issue. Was just wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom in the meantime. Thanks for reading all this if you got this far.

i only get my car serviced at the car dealership, i get free oil change and filter but ive also known people that worked at places like jiffy lube or valvoline that will sell you anything they can and do as little as possible. the people that greet you when you drive up are paid based on their average ticket price(avg price of service per vehicle) and my friend averaged over $90 a car. he could sell anything, he would sell rear differential lube and service to front wheel drive cars, one time some guy brought his car in and just said he needed an oil change and ran off before my friend got a chance to talk to him, he walked down the street to the starbucks, sat down with the guy and sold him $400 worth of service. they used to put mop water in a cup with antifreeze to sell a radiator flush. some of the people that work there are incredibly good at selling stuff and they will try and sell you anything, i know my friends pay went up over $2/hour in the first 4 months of working there because he did so good. they never really did anything wrong or incorrect, they just fixed and serviced stuff that didnt need fixing or servicing. im sure not all places are like that but if you are not set on what youre going to get done when you go in there look out
