Is it time? (Transmission)

My 06 A/T TSX is at 105k miles.

It just started making a humming noise, specifically when I am accelerating. I mainly hear it on the highway when going 70-80mph in 4th and 5th gear. The humming sound is almost like the sound I get when switching from summer tires to snow tires. Is this my transmission starting to go? I looked around the forums a bit and the maintenance interval and it seems likely.

I know there's quite a few of you with an 06 over 100k miles so hopefully I can get my question answered here.

Does the hum go away if you take your foot off the accelerator at 70 to 80mph?

Yes, only when accelerating. This could just be me, or my gas, but I feel like there has been a slight loss of power recently too. Not sure if that helps.

Sounds like it may be an axle. If it was a wheel bearing it would hum, whether under acceleration or not. Doubt it's the transmision.

Some people have complained about a very faint whine in transmission between 40 to 60mph that goes away if you take your foot off the accelerator. But I dont recall if anyone was going 70mph+ when they heard it.

I doubt very much that this problem will lead to a transmission failure.

Simba, does the TSX have front and rear axles or just front axles? Is the axle changed whenever you change the CV joint and boot? is the axle within this CV joint part?

I am hearing a very low hum noise when accelerating from slow speeds. more evident when really quiet outside such as late at night. However, I do not hear any noise when turning like when a CV joint is worn out.

Whoops I forgot to mention that. I just had one of my front axles replaced. I know the other boot was starting to wear, but when I had my axle replaced a few months back, it was not leaking yet. Back in November I was getting a lot of vibration when accelerating before, which is when I discovered my boot was completely shot. Getting that one replaced fixed the vibrations, but now I'm getting that humming.

Miami, I believe the TSX has 4 independent axles(someone correct me if this is wrong)

On the other forum, this is a known problem for 1st gen TSXes. It's the transmission. It's just noise, doesn't really hinder performance.

I've had this noise on highway acceleration since I bought the car almsot 30k miles ago, no major problems yet. Knock on wood

It just started though, which means something about the car changed, that is out of the "norm".

The TSX is front wheel drive and has axles only in front. The rear wheels are attached to a "hub" (basically just a spinle with an inner and outer bearing). You should have replaced both axles, as like headlights and wiper blades, they should be replaced in pairs. I've never had any problems so I can't speak from experience, but if memory serves, your problems sound like those recounted by people here who have had axle problems (and there have been plenty). I was hoping at least one of those would chime in.

Thank you very much, I was not aware it was recommended to be replaced together. Being a broke college student, I wasn't able to have both replaced at the same time. I guess I should do that soon though. I'll let you know how things turn out and if it resolves the issue. Thanks again
