Scraping Noise From The Rear

I've tried searching, no answers. Everyone has their own guess as to why it happens but theres no definite answer from anyone.

So the problem is I get a scraping noise from my rear wheel or possibly wheels when driving. But the sound only occurs when my steering wheel is tilted to the right or making right turns. I haven't tried taking it apart because my academic schedule doesn't allow it until the weekend but i would like to know if it's goin to be detrimental to my car.

2006 TSX 5AT nav. 34k miles. Still on stock rotors. But my housmate with an 03 TL is having the same problem with left turns. And so is my friend with a 93T Saab, his rotors were just replaced last thurs. Crazy Stuff. possibly something we're driving on?

I am still under warranty but i would like to identify the problem before going in because I don't have the time to leave my car there to diagnose and repair or if i even have to bring it in.

Help me out. TY.

A scraping noise is kinda vague. Wheels rubbing on your wheel well on one side cause your coilovers are dropped too far and your offset is too low? Wrecked and it's just a noise you'll have to live with? Bad joint in the front steering that vibrates your entire frame and something's rattling in the back?
With the description you've given, you're not going to get a definite answer. Your dealer should give you a loaner while they've got it so you won't really be without a vehicle if you bring it in.

car is bone stock besides new rims. Original OEM rotors and pads in the rears, hawk hps in the front. Its a scraping sound coming from within the wheel, not the tire rubbing the wheel well. the sound happens when i'm driving but goes away when i brake.

It use to only happen when i turned right but now if the wheels straight it still happens. Also it's more prone to make the noise when i'm reversing for some odd reason... the sounds metal to metal scraping. As goes for my friend with the TL.

Dealers don't usually give out loaners unless you bought your car from them, atleast not the ones in nyc. and the dealer i bought my car from jsut won't give out loaners.

Have you checked your rear brake pads ?? When they are low, they will start making a metal scraping sound (because of the wear bar) whenever they feel like it. Mine was really weird for a while, kept coming and going. I finally checked them, outer pads were almost to the metal.

hmmm, yea check your brakes. The rear brake pads are well known to go out early. Do you ever notice it when you brake? Maybe just when lightly braking?

never happens when i brake. only while driving, i thought the metal sound would only occur when i brake.

Pads will make noise even when the brakes aren't engaged?

They can make noise when you aren't braking. There's no real release mechanism, you just let off the pressure in the piston and they move away from your rotors just enough to release the pressure between the pads and rotors. They're still up against the rotor technically. There's no significant gap between the pad and rotor. If there was, you'd feel the slack in the brake pedal every time you brake.

hmmm it does sound like the wear indicator on the pads is touching the rotor surface. By your description it sounds like the pads are down to 2mm or less of friction material

I agree that it sounds like a brake problem. My friend had a similar issue on his evo. Had minor scrapping sounds which became a constant horrible grinding. We heard it when he took turns in either direction. Perhaps the reason it stops when you brake is because when you apply pressure enough contact is made to not make the sound... When your foot is off the brake, just enough metal is touching the rotor to cause the sound but once you apply pressure the brake pad makes full contact thus no sound. I might be completely wrong but I noticed that's what was happening on his car until the whole thing just sounded horrible. Just a simple brake job and you should be fine.

In my car, I never heard it when I put on the brakes. Only randomly when driving. I could be doing 100mph down the road and the sound would start for like 10 seconds, then go away, even when I never touched the brakes. But it was the rear pads that were the cause!

Just check the pads! No point in discussing why it does or doesn't make the sound at certain times. Just stick your finger through the rim and check the pad thickness with your finger.

i think it might be pads, took a look they're kinda low.. but the noise is weird, its not a constant, it vary's like it only scratchs on one part of my rotor. It pulse's depending on how fast i'm going, if i roll at 5 mph it'll be slow, if it was the indicator shouldn't it be a constant scratching noise at all times as the rotor spins?

not at all. As you spin the wheel and rotor faster (drive faster) you'll rub the indicator faster which will produce a different vibration and tone. You may also have a slightly warped rotor which is only scraping the indicator half of the rotation, so you'd get an intermittent (sp?) noise at all speeds, but it would only be noticeable at lower speeds normally. Your pad may also not be releasing perfectly square with the rotor so sometimes making the indicator rub and sometimes not depending on how it releases. If your rotors are a little warped, the warped section could bump the pad and move it a little, either making the noise, or stopping it very inconsistantly.

I'm 1000% sure it's your rear pads. Symptoms are exactly what I had when my rears were low.

attempted to do the pad change today, ran into a little problem... my jack can't jack the rear high enough... cheezy walmart brand jack =\. Doesnt even get my tires off the ground, tried stacking 2 pieces of wood on it. gave it ~3" extra, still didn't work.

Since i gotta remove the E-brake, i assume it's a reall bad idea to jack up one side with a jack and do the pad change. So any other ideas someones got for me? Besides buying a new jack...

I changed my rear pads one side at a time. Just make sure your car is in Park or a gear if it's manual. I stuck mine in reverse since it's a manual and left the e-brake off. No problems at all.

Just do it on a level surface. It doesn't have to be perfectly level as long as your car doesn't roll when it's in neutral without using the brakes, it's level enough. For added safety you could always chok the front wheels. A brick or 2x4 works well.

got it done, propped my jack with with a 2x4, 2 phone books and a brick to fit the stands in. pads were really low, fixed the problem =D. But the caliper has such little room for play since the brake line is so short... biggest issue was compressing the rotor, even with the cube.
