Metal-on-Metal sound when turning left
Hey All,
I have an '04 with roughly 105k on the odometer and I've recently noticed a metal-on-metal scraping sound when turning left.
The sound was first heard by a co-worker of mine when we were on the freeway a few weeks ago. I heard it and tried to figure out where it was coming from, but the sound went away before I could figure anything out and I was unable to make the car reproduce it. The sound didn't come back until today...
Today, I'm driving around town and noticed that when I'd turn left, I'd hear the same sound. It was pretty consistent for a good portion of the day. I'd turn left, and you'd hear the sound. It does not happen when turning right or driving straight and does not vary with speed. It also does not happen when braking (though I haven't tried braking while turning left to see if the sound changed or went away).
I'm 99% sure the sound was coming from my right rear wheel. I wanted to post a recording of the sound but when I got home I couldn't get the car to re-produce the sound!!
I looked at the outside face of the rotor and it looks clean. I can't see the inside face as I'm in the middle of moving and my jack and jack stands are packed away. So I guess it's possible that some crud got stuck between the inside pad and rotor or the splashguard/backing plate and rotor, but I'm not convinced just yet.
Any other possible causes to a metal-on-metal scraping sound with the right rear wheel when turning left?
I hope this makes sense

I'm pretty sure it's the right rear. The next time the problem resurfaces I'm going to have somebody stand outside while I drive by them to try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. From the inside, it sounds like it's coming from the right rear fender well.
I was thinking about a worn bushing. I might be able to check it out this weekend. I'll jack it up and tug on everything around the wheel to see if I can find some slop somewhere.

Oye I feel STOOPID...

Explains everything.
It was just weird how braking was totally silent. In previous cars I've owned, I'd hear a slight consistent squeal the first 1-2 seconds after applying the brakes. Eh well, now I know. Off to find new rear pads! Fronts still look ok.

^ Yep.
The left pad is the outer pad, and the right pad is the inner pad. The metal tab on the left of the inner pad is the tab that was making noise indicating that the pad was low.
I decided to replace the brake pads all-round. Ordered Hawk HPS's yesterday from TireRack for $170 (all 4 wheels). Probably paid more than I needed to, but they estimated delivery as soon as tomorrow!

had this issue before .. annoys me how the inner pad is worn down faster than the outside. at first i thought something is wrong with the caliper piston. after many hours of research .. found out this is normal. apparently the pad material is too soft. if your mileage is still within warranty, i think this issue is under warranty. check with dealer .. read somewhere that they had a tsb for this.
