Reverse Gear Problem

I don't know if this goes with everyone on this forum, but every so often when I put my 6MT into reverse I hear a grinding sound. Even when I am not in motion I try putting it in reverse and the gear grinds out. I told the guys at service to take a look at it and maybe they'll find out what's wrong, but they gave an explanation that when the something is moving and I try putting it in gear it'll grind. Anyone else having this problem or know why it happens?

Normal depending on circumstances. If you happen to engage reverse before the tranny is fully disengaged then it might grind slightly. This should happen only very rarely.

This has also happened to me I think - Full stop, clutch in, shift to reverse, hear a clunk/grind noise...Does not sound good, but I figured this was normal?

Reason why you hear a click (or clunk) when you put it in reverse is that the reverse gear does NOT have a synchro (unlikes ther other 6 forward gears). That's why you can't put the car in reverse if you are creeping forward/backwards..you will hear a nasty grind if you do. Make sure you are stopped completely before putting car in reverse. A little clunk will be normal..

The only car I know that has a synchro in reverse gear is the NSX

You may also want to try putting the transmission into first or second gear before shifting to reverse. This should help.

What the mechanics are trying to tell you is that even though the car has stopped the transmission can still be turning after you depress the clutch. Thus the noise when you attempt to shift into reverse.
Just wait a second or so before selecting reverse...

My reverse gear grinds????!!!

Okay, when i take off from home, i have a slanted garage, so i can just roll backwards. While im rolling backwards and i try to put it in reverse gear, it grinds like a mofo, like KKKRRRR!!! is that normal for the TSX?

Never try and go into reverse when the car is moving. Reverse has no synchros.

Yeap, and it seems it's particularly pronounced with the TSX compared to other cars. And you should NEVER try to force it in when it grinds as well. You don't want a dented gear so early in it's life.

I just merged both threads as the topic is the exact same thing.

It should not happen with second gear. Pay attention to your shifting.

There is no synchros for the reverse.
You can shift to the 1st gear to line up the gear first, and then shift to reverse.
Works 99.99% of the time.
