Redline up to 8000..... -_-

So i was just messing around the other day and i guess i missed the gear and the rpm went up to 8000.....think i did any engine damage? isnt there a rev limiter on there so it cant go up to 8? car still runs fine but seems a little slower, maybe its just me? anybody dont something stupid like this before?

Rev limiter is there, but when downshifting into too low a gear it will be useless... (mechanical overrevving). A onceoff rev to 8000 should not have damaged your engine... I wouldn't worry about it too much..

Couple of notes. The ECU did record the over rev, so even if something happened, it won't be covered. Good news, Hondata ECU puts us at 7600 RPMs, so I wouldn't be too concerned. The only possible issue is floating the valve and you'd know that immediately.

Lets assume you overrev'd for a second
8000 RPMs = 133.3 revs/sec
7600 RPMs = 126.7 revs/sec (Hondata rev limit)

You did an extra 18 revs

Made a similar mistake recently when I downshited from 5th into 2nd,..instead of 4th,...perhaps it had something to do with the truck I tried passing in order to make a turn off,.....but no damage & I hit the red line HARD!!!

really?

I made a mistake in an AT -- first time I used SS. I was getting onto a busy freeway and saw and open spot up ahead. I switched over to SS and gunned it. Well I didn't shift in time because I was watching the road and not my RPMs and hit redline hard. I thought that if this happened the SS would automatically upshift for me -- guess I was wrong, because I just about shat my pants when I looked down and saw the needle up in the red.

Needless to say, that was the first and last time I'll use SS.

You can't really over rev on an automatic. There is a rev-limiter to prevent this. Also, an automatic will not allow you to downshift if your revs are too high.

Over-rev (only in a manual) is when you downshift (at a high rpm) into a low gear (i.e. 7300rpm at 2nd, downshifting into 1st, etc).

The engine is probably fine, just don't do it too often.

There is a funny response to this, but not appropriate.

Yes, in certain situations, the ECU will data log events. I heard a first hand story of an RSX Type-S that came in with a blown motor. Guy tried to claim it as some sort of defect. They retrieved the data log and show the guy that he was accelerating at a fast rate and then the motor overrev'd.

According to my service rep, it happens quite often with RSX-S owners. Mostly on downshifts. That data log is a bitch.

I want to hear the inappropriate comment. c'mon.

I was going to say,

"Yup, AT is idiot proof, Lucky for Jan"

I was referring to being in first gear in SS mode and and accelerating. I was watching the road and half expecting it to shift up to 2nd for me, but it didn't.

I guess I seemed to have found a way to override the idiot-proof mechanism

Not at all. You just hit the rev limiter. All the car did is hit the rev limiter and sit there. The AT won't allow you blow the engine when you don't upshift.

Did you happen to hear this at Superior Acura, regarding an incident from 3-4 years ago?

When you hit the rev limiter the ECU will cut fuel. It will feel like the engine coughed and you'll see the RPMs drop until fuel is restored.

Don't ask me how I know.

ahh ok. Thanks for clearing it up guys. It makes sense now, because when I felt the car "cough" I quickly looked down and saw the needle falling from red. I guess I assumed it was in the red (by the cough) when I saw it was pretty close.
