Rattling in steering wheel?

Well i had to take my car in twice to get the rear trunk rattling issue resolved. Now i'm starting to hear rattles up front...seems like its coming from somewhere inside the steering column?? has anyone experienced this? all these rattligns popping up is starting to frustrate me. i never had a single rattle with my 98 Accord!

I had this rattle as well. I say had because it seems to have gone away by itself for the time being. It will probably return when the temperature changes again. I have noticed a number of the minor rattles seem to be temperature dependent and are possibly related to moisture or fit and finish expanding and contracting.

Let me know if you discover the source.

Is it more of a grinding or a rattling; like gears coming together? Could be the bearings in the steering column.

Yeah, I just had it fixed - five days ago, so far so good. Problem as described/shown to me is the vibration dampener bangs up againt some plastic shit in the column. They felt taped it, hopefully it lasts. To be specific, does it sound like it's comming from in/around the airbag assembly? If so, then it's likely the same problem I had.

at first i thought it was coming from the instrument panel but it seems like it's coming right from inside the steering column (not the steering wheel itself)

Yup, that's the bitch. I thought the same thing too at first and that's also what the tech told me he thought initially as well. I actually didn't bring it in until I tracked it down myself, it's behind the steering wheel mounting point. If you bang on the wheel you should be able to reproduce the sound, it would be the secondary vibration (after the hit).

Cripes, good to hear that others are still complaining about this. I had that rattle from the first month I owned the car and it's resurfaced now that the temperatures are dropping again. It drives me absolutely nuts.

The service dept. at my Acura dealership were unable to fix it the first time but I hope they can when I go in later this month.

I'll bet it is temp dependent. I hadn't thought about it till just now, but when I brought it in, they didn't look at the car until midday and then couldn't reproduce the noise (also didn't seem to believe me). I went to get the car in the morning the next day and a different tech looked at it as was able to reproduce it. If it is the same rattle, it's the vibration dampener which is a hard rubber donut that for whatever reason can pivot slightly and bang against the steering wheel mount and/or plastic housings of the electronics in the column.

That sounds like what I'm experiencing. It's a kind of springy plastic rattle sound and usually rattles going over patches in the road. Is that what you had too?

The first time I went in to ask them about it I went in with a print out of a thread off here and the service manager quite abruptly said, "It's from an American web forum, so it doesn't apply to your car." Gee, thanks.

Thanks for your help. I'll try convincing them to check the vibration dampener.
