Hmm...maybe its the shifter?

Gee, it's not too encouraging hearing all these problems on squeaks and rattles. I hate squeaks and rattles and hope we don't get a lemon!

Well, actually is not as bugging as getting other cars with malfunctioning tranny, faulty alternator, and any otehr serious mechanical defects. The rattles is not a very big deal to start off, just that I don't think we deserve those rattle on a new car which we paid way almost 30K before tax. If we love rattle, we might as well just get a used one. I still love my TSX anyhow, handles damn good, took an almost 90 degree turn at 60, and don't feel threatening at all.....but the tires suck......

I have been lucky. I havn't had a car with rattles since my 79 Capri (same body as the 79 Mustang). Some people are more annoyed by rattles than others. Drives me nuts. My wife is more forgiving. Well, it's her TSX so it's only a big problem when I drive it. She only gets annoyed when other people are in the car with her and she has to explain the noises.

My car has 1200 miles right now. The same kind of squaek that was reported in the front winshield when going over bumps was heard in the rear window behind the driver side. This happen in the last week.
I need to verify this by having somebody hold that area ( the deck and glass ) while going over bumps to see if an insulating tape could solve the problem.

Yeah so i brought my new born baby (TSX) to the dealer friday so they could eliminate my first rattle sound. Went to pick it up today and they said that they fixed it by putting some foam in one of the A - pillars. So i was optimistic and grabbed the keys, jumped in my car and took off. Well ofcourse they did not actually fix the problem so i turned the car around and went straight back to the dealer where i handed the keys back to the man who had just handed them to me. I also pointed out to them that not only had they not fixed the problem but there was now also dirt/stains on the A-pillar that had work done to it.

Nothing like bringing your car to have it fixed and not only do they not fix the problem but they also give it back to you worse then the way it came in. What i also noticed is that when you squeeze either of the front A- pillars with your hands they make the same creaking sound that i hear over bumps. I have a feeling that the construction of them is to blame for this particular rattle problem. BUt we will see....

To be continued

I have a lot of rattling in my TSX, so your no alone. I am surprised that the TSX has more rattling and vibrations than my 1992 Honda Accord LX sedan and that has 171k miles on it. I don't know what is causing it cuz the dealer looked at it at it when I took it to service last month.

My TSX has only 9k miles on it, but how come its rattling so soon?

I can't always repeat the problem, but the area around the windshield makes a creaking kind of sound when I go over bumps, usually for a while when the car has first started up, then as the car warms up after many miles it quiets down. The noise wasn't there this morning, but was there yesterday evening. LeMasseHammer, where exactly did the dealer put the insulating tape? Is that up in the space between the windshield and the dash? What is "insulating" tape anyways? Thanks. I'm kind of waiting to take it to the dealer until I can tell them for sure what is making the noise, cause I don't want to waste my time there only to have them say they can't duplicate it.

The tech that rode with me to make the diagnosis said this was a common problem with Acura/Honda because the interior is made to such tight/exact specs. They "loosened" the dash, put the tape in there and I have had a quiet passenger side dash ever since.

Actually, their first (mis)diagnosis for the dash rattle involved the passenger side circular vent, which they replaced. It obviously didn't solve the problem, but they did leave black greasy handprints on my A-pillar

I also get most, if not all, of the rattles mentioned before (especially the door panel rattle (almost all the time), but also the headliner rattle...from the sunroof area? (from time to time)....and also sometimes the dashboard squeak (rare, but on certain occasions).

What's really starting to annoy me know is a metallic clicking noise which seems to be coming from the left side audio control area on the steering wheel while in motion. You know that part is metal, and when I rest my left hand in that area and apply some pressure (i.e., slight pressure when gripping the wheel at speed), I get a metallic clicking. When I ease up on the pressure, it stops. I'm not talking about death grip on the steering wheel either. Even resting my left hand in that area starts the clicking. So most of the time, I have to put my hands on an area of the steering wheel away from the radio controls, which kinda defeats the purpose. It also forces my left hand in an awkward and not too comfortable position on the steering wheel instead of the most comfortable position which is in the thumb rest near the audio controls.

Anyone know what I am talking about (try to listen for it when you are on the road....just put your left hand near the audio controls with your left thumb in the natural position on the left thumb rest near the radio controls....and apply some downward or forward pressure).

The creaking noise I have is intermittent up around the windshield area. I don't know if it's the dash or the a-pillar or something in the windshield seal. It only happens when going over bumps that flex the body a little, it make a creaking noise, louder and more than it should. The noise doesn't seem to happen when it is warmer out or is raining or if there is morning dew, but it does happen when it is colder and when the car is dry. Does this sound like any symptoms other people have had? I'm bringing it to the dealer next week, I hope they can find it.

hey hobbestec

that's the same creaking sound/location that i am having trouble with. so far my car has been at the dealer since last friday and they have been doing the process of elimination thing with it. currently they are driving it around with the dashboard removed and using a stethescope to try and find the source of the sound. boy am i glad that i am not the one that has to try and find this sound. i am happy that they admit that they do hear it and they have said that they will not stop until it is solved.

once i find out what they find out i will let everyone know.

Thanks JiggaMan, good luck. It seems like it's hard to pinpoint. I remember you posting about going to a meet in MA, are you in Massachusetts? What dealer are you going to? I'm gonna be dropping it off at Acura of Boston next week to see if they can find anything. This evening I shoved some paper in the corners of the dash next to the a-pillar, between the dash and windshield. I think that is where the sound is coming from, and want to see if the paper will muffle it. I'll find if my theory holds up in the next few days. I can also push on the a-pillar and make a similar sound when it scrapes along the windshield, but the rattle doesn't go away when I hold the a-pillar steady so that might just be a coincidence.

Damn, that's the kind of dealer I think we all wish we had

But sorry to hear you're without your car for so long...

well my dealer has said that they found the source of the problem. it is the plastic molding on the outside of the car right below where the windshield is. they feel that the one i have must have been a little defective so that it is rubbing against the a-pillar or something whenever i hit a bump. they ordered a new one which should be in tomorrow and then we will see if that is what the problem was all along. they said they found this out by driving around with that plastic piece removed and it made creaking sound.

the technician only happened to make a guess that it was this particular piece and really was just a stab in the dark that proved to be right (hopefully).

i'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

So that means the plastic piece prevents the creaking noise, and since your plastic molding piece is defective the creaking noise happens? That sounds kinda backwards to me, but we shall see. Let me know how things turn out. My paper stuffed in the corners seems to be helping prevent the sound so far. I think it may be something rubbing against the windshield there, either the apillar cover or the dash. I'm starting to think the sound is coming from along the apillar cover where it touches the windshield. I'm trying to figure out what this anti-squeak tape is that I hear dealers use on things to make them stop squeaking. Does anyone know what it is, and where could I get some?

Oh man. I'm with you guys. I only have 1050KMs on mine and thinking I won't have any problems. Well. I was wrong. I don't have the rattle problem but I do have the sunroof squeak and the dashboard cracking which just started this morning. I've already made an appointment with my dealer. But my car is still too new. I think I'll drive it a bit more first. But I really hope it's something simple to fix just like the fellow member who saids the dealer used some sort of tape? Let's hope it's that easy.

I too have the dash/windshield creak and the driver's door lock rattle. The dash creak was also present in my parent's '95 Nissan Maxima, but it was in the middle where I think mine is on the left and right sides near the a-pillars. I stuck some note cards in between the dash and a-pillar and it seemed to silence the noise. I am going to probably wait a few more weeks till my 3.7k oil change. As for the door lock, it stops when the slightest pressure is placed on the side of the door perpendicual to the lock, so I hope they can just put something in there to stop the rattle.

Ok here is the update i promised.

The dealer replaced the cowl in front of the windshield with a new one that had to be ordered from somewhere in texas cuz that part was on back order. the annoying creaking sound is now gone. in the report they also wrote that they "EPT foamed everything". So there is hope for all of you with this particular problem. Now i can finally make an appointment to get my springs and Injen intake installed. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Just so you know. I drove home with the stereo turned off and purposely drove over any bumps in the road that i could see and didn't even hear a little peep.

Congrats Jigga!

Can you recap what your symptoms were? This dash creak is driving me so nutty that I had a dream last night about the dealer removing dash components and finally diagnosing the problem. But I'm not sure my problem is the same as yours (I already corrected the dash rubbing windshield issue, but now I hear creaking from the center console or dash area -- very general, but consistent and embarrassing).

Thanks Jiggaman. My noise creaking noise seems to be coming from all along the bottom of the dash, up near the windshield. The paper I tried sticking in there seemed to be working, but I think it was just too warm out, because today it started making the noise again with paper stuck in there. I'm off to the dealer tuesday, i'll see if they can find anything.

Latest laundry list of noises:

I took my car to the dealer on Monday morning so they could look at the following:

•Buzzing from steering wheel/column over sharp bumps
•Headliner(?) rustling – above left rear passenger’s window
•Interior rear door handle rattle – plastic piece not mounted snugly
•Creaking from center console or dash area when making turns at slow speed
•Sunroof gasket needs lubrication or it gets squeaky
•Driver side dash rubbing against windshield when outside temp gets cold. Needs insulating tape applied, just as was done to passenger side in June
•Driver’s doorlock buzzes at certain highway or music frequency. This has something to do with the window glass because tapping the window down just a fraction of an inch (or applying pressure to the window) stops the buzzing.

The tech that rode with me showed genuine interest in the problems, and acknowledged all of them except the creaking dash when turning at slow speeds (which I couldn't reproduce on queue, dammit). Anyway, they kept my car overnight, which I hope is a good sign that they're actually fixing something. I've got a good feeling about this service visit, and I'll report back with details when I pick up my car (hopefully this afternoon)...

LeMasseHammer, from SoCal that smells like hell right now.

I dropped it off at Acura of Boston yesterday, but I think it was too warm out and it had just rained that morning, so the couldn't duplicate the noise. They test drove it twice. They said next time they will have a service manager person ride with me so I can point out the noise. I think i'm gonna have to wait till it gets fairly cold so I can duplicate the noise consistently. They even have TSX loaner cars, and the one I got sounded like it was also slightly making the noise when I drove it back that evening, so I think it's only a matter of time until a TSB is released about this creaking noise. I'm thinking it has something to do with the windshield cowl, which I think is the part that JiggaMan got replaced.

New rattle that I found in mine is that when I rev the engine up to 7000, there's rattling coming from the dashboard aroudn the same place where the creaking sound came from.......I have no idea why because it never happened before. I am suspecting that the dealer forgot to tighten things up when I brought it in to check for the creaking sound and they say they can;t fixed it and sounded like "You should try to live with it" attitute........Very disappointed on my first brand new acura.

Are all these the design issue?

While sitting in the traffic this morning, I discovered that for the passenger front airbag to deploy, the whole dash cover probably need to pop up too! Is that means that plastic/vinyl dash cannot be too tight or one piece or anything that prevent the airbag deploy? So, rattles noise tend to come out from there either.

Update re: rattles fixed by dealer

These are basically direct quotes from my dealer paperwork...

Issue #1: "There is a muffled rustling sound from the sunroof when driving on a rough road"
Solution: "Found sunroof seal making noise, cleaned and lubricated seal with 1 08798-9013 grease."

Issue #2: "There is a rattle in the drivers door when driving over rough road."
Solution: "Found rattle in door, mostly when bass on the radio was turned up. Removed door panel and insluated mounting points, speaker and upper edge."

Issue #3: "There is a rattle from both rear interior doors."
Solution: "Found dirt between window and seal. Cleaned windows and seals."

Issue #4: "There is a buzz sound coming from the steering column when going over sharp bumps."
Solution: "This is normal on all TSX models. It's caused by the horn springs and cable wheel on the airbag."
Explanation: Tech took out the airbag to examine the problem and found that modification would be required to stop the buzzing, which could interfere with the airbag's ability to function properly. Tech found same buzzing on other TSXs on the lot. My girlfriend's '03 Accord has the same buzz from the steering wheel (try hitting it with the butt of your hand).

Issue #5: "There is a creak sound coming from the dash when turning at low speeds."
Solution: "Customer could not duplicate noise." "Applied EPT sealer to front pillars" (which will stop the dash rubbing window noise).

My comments:
I'm pretty happy, although the most annoying sound remains(creaking center console or dash area while turning at slow speeds). This tech really seemed interested in the problems, and in trying to fix them. They insulated the hell out of my drivers side door, and the bass rattle has quieted a lot, and I haven't heard any doorlock buzzing either. Sunroof seems silent. Just knowing that the steering wheel buzz can't be fixed seems to make it easier to live with. The EPT sealer ought to prevent dash tapping noise near the tweeters, which seemed to be happening more as the weather is cooling.

Hope this report helps some of you or is at least entertaining

1000 miles today - glad to say I have the speaker rattles also. Easy to test - turn base up, treble down, then rotate sound around each corner of car at moderate volume (20). Both left and right front door speakers - rest are ok. I can easily live with this until I go in for 1st service. Almost lost windshield to a stone thrown by a truck on the hiway today. Left a mark but no crack or hole.
