Possible solution to Tints being scratched...

Well all, after work today at the shop I decided to take a look at the inside of the door and this hard molding that has been causing all the scratches. I read many threads about it and decided to see what i can do.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...tint+scratches

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...tint+scratches

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...tint+scratches

I took all the doors off and after looking over it I decided to take a blade and slice off the inner hard piece that everyone is putting felt on. It took me a while to decide I really wanted to do it but I looked at it long and hard then realized it really does not do much. First off, Slim to no water is ever hitting the inner window molding and if it did that little amount would be stopped by the first softer molding. I cut it all the way down on the inside of every door and cleaned the first upper molding. I will keep you all posted in order to let you all know if it will solve the problem. I really think it will though.

Yay! No More Scratches

I suspect that you will get a lot of wind noise. When I had my car tinted, the installer removed the inner pieces without telling me. There was a lot of wind noise when I drove above 60 mph. I went back to the tint shop, and after some discussion, the owner agreed to buy and install new pieces, and now the noise is gone.

I think it was all in your head... What could he have cut that would let wind enter the cabin? Have you taken the door apart yet? The door is solid and the wind cant enter it at all so that makes no sense. The rubber piece is on the inner part of the door so the outer one still blocks all of the water and wind. I Have not noticed a difference.

I have researched this as well because of my water problem and because when i called around to different tint places, i had 3 shops tell me that they cut this same piece off. I just don't know how i feel about and i did talk to CJams about it and he recommended not doing it for the exact reason stated above.....road/wind noise. I can see if maybe you put like sound proofing on the inside of the door or something and then cut it off but it really does prevent a lot from coming through into the cabin. And trust me, i would be the first on to try and get rid of that stupid piece of crap since my inside of my windows get wet everytime it rains hard.....still can't figure it out and am looking for help in that area.....lol

Wait... your inside of the window gets wet when it rains hard???? Thats is strange. Even when the window is up all the way? Now that you mention it, i do have dynamatt installed on the doors and trunklid so maybe that is why I do not hear the same noise you did. The dynamatt helps alot for noise and I recomend that if you do want to cut down noise. So your saying that you think you are getting water in the door because of that inner rubber piece getting cut off?? Is that what the tint shops said? I really looked hard and long at it and I cant possibly see it blocking water when the windows are up. When the window is 1/2 down or all the way down that is a different story. You should never get water on the inner part of the window.

I have a two year old 05 TSX. I got Formula One tint two days after I bought it. I use my windows extensively and after more then two years I do not have any scratches on it. I seen 3rd gen TL with those fines scratches but it doesn't seem that bad on the TSX. I still don't recommend slicing the hard rubber off, just go with a good tint like Formula One.

I got Johnson's tints and that is supposed to be the best. A lot of people on the forum have used many different tints and they still get the scratches... I dont know why you dont have them but all the people I know have them. Even my friend with an accord 05 coupe has the same problem. Tls and Tsxs... Cutting the strip worked for me. For now at least.

I have F1 and roll my window up/dn at least twice a day just to get into work. No scratches. I thnk the key is just to key the inside of the window clean and once in awhile clean along that strip to remove any road grime that may have built up. I think it is this grime/dirt etc which gets between the hard rubber and tint and causes the scratching. Oh and I have no mole skin.

I've got pinnacle ceramics tints on mine, tints are about 14 months old, and they are scratched all to hell. I don't know how some of you guys aren't getting streak city like I am.

I do intend to install moleskin (already have a roll of it) and re-tint the windows, but that's just been very low on the project list.

I have sliced all of the lower inner molding off on all doors and I have had no problems so far. The scratches stopped and there is no water getting in the doors, I have checked. For me this worked and I am happy with it. No glue streeks on windows or felt coming off. Its been a few weeks and some bad rains have came and I am good so far...

I have an 07 that I had tinted (35%) and the shop told me about the scratch problem on the TSX before he did the job. He also said not to use the moleskin b/c the adhesive eventually breaks down due to heat in the summer and smears up the window, not to mention the moleskin coming off inside the door. They also said that they could cut/trim the piece off the seal but it might make 'some' wind noise. Well, I said go ahead and trim the piece back- I mean how much noise can it make right? Well, DON'T DO IT!!! I spent $70 at Acura ordering new ones the next day b/c it sounded terrible... I cant believe how much noise that little piece of rubber keeps out of the cabin. They told me to keep the seals clean and I shouldn't have a problem but I've yet to roll my windows down. The TSX is already noisy enough in my opinion... I couldn't stand much more. I'm still scared to roll em down tho.

No noticeable wind noise here and I cut them off completely. I bet if he never told you about the wind noise you would have never noticed or thought about it. I am sure he did it just to be safe and cover his ass. NOTHING here.

Like I posted before, I cut off the inner lower molding that is giving every one the scratches and I have not had any scratches since I did it. I only have one that is not noticeable and that is the one I saw then decided to cut the molding so no more accumulate. I have not had one since. No road noise that I can tell and I am very picky. It worked for me and I have not had any problems with water.

It would be good to get the skinny from CJAMS. But he's probably busy running the install shop, and making money. I was just getting ready to get a tint installed when this thread started. Looks like there's no difference in scratching on different brands.

would the car look any different (if you look at that part) if you have the mole skin installed?

No, its inside the door and there is no way to see it unless you peel back the upper outer molding.

You said this, yet you keep recommending everyone to cut the strip. The TSX doesn't come with the doors already dynamatted. If you take off your dynamat, then test for wind noise, I'd take that as proof that cutting the strip doesn't increase wind noise.

For now, I'll go with the other people who said that cutting the strip increases wind noise. I don't think they all dynamatted their cars too. Perhaps the chart should go something like this:

dynamat + cut strip = no noise
no dynamat + cut strip = noise

If you're so adamant that cutting the strip has no effect whatsoever on wind noise, would you consider reimbursing one of us $70 to get new strips in case your opinion is wrong?

I had tints put on last week and the installer cut the strips off. Definetely more road noise, i'm thinking the noise could be coming up between the door panel and the glass.... gotta find a solution, the car certainly doesn't feel luxury with all that noise.

Cool

People will interpret different levels of noise as wind noise and if you don't have some sort of meter you will think it increased anyways because of the presupposition already in your mind. I can not tell you what it would sound like without Dynamat because I did it after the Dynamat install. You might be right and yes it does make sense why I hear less noise. Reimburse lol... it is a mere suggestion I don't have a gun to your head sir. If you Dynamat your car and cut the strips you will not have wind noise. So far I have no signs of water either and I have gone through many rains so far. (It is also raining now.) I additionally checked this at different speeds and still nothing. I was going 100 and I heard no wind coming from the door at all.

relik2004, where exactly did you put dynamat on your door, did you cover the plastic that is already on the door or did you pull that off and also put some inside the door? I am hoping this may help with the noise. On a stock car there is certainly more road noise. My wife didn't know about the strips being cut after the tint job and when we got on the highway she was asking me if I had window down or something because the car seemed a lot louder than normal. She thought it sounded more like her Murano. I drove around with the door panel off and I couldn't feel any actual air movement however there is an increased amount of noise around the door lock which I suspect is air moving around the exterior door handle. I'm thinking of trying to dynamat around that area if I can find a way to do it without interfering with the mechanism then dynamatting the rest of the door. Now I have to go order a pile of dynamat and hope that works.

Take a look at the pictures I took and you can do the same install. what you see is what I dynamated. I took the shit plastic off because it makes more noise than it stops.
