is it a nightmare?

What would happen if something dropped into the engine during oil change?
That thing is the white small cover between the bottle and the cap.
what would happen?

At worst it will get stuck in the valve train somewhere or block an oil drain hole. At best it will get wegded in some corner the block for the rest of the life of the car. If it's going to keep you up at night, take the valve cover off and find/remove the offending seal.

I would definately take it out. If you ever have a warrenty issue with the engine and they find the white seal in there, you may have a big problem. The only thing you want in you engine is clean oil. Next time use a funnel. Good luck!

this is just a complete guess. But it wouldnt surprise me if there is a screen or filter of some sort that would catch it before it got to the engine

Good enough of a reason for you to get your maintenance done at the dealer. It will save you those "nightmares".

Have you ever looked into the oil filler hole? You can see the valvetrain right there - there's nothing to keep anyone droping something in there. Whatever you drop in there won't get into the engine but you might not want it rattling around the valvetrain either.

You'll have to take it to someone to take the valve cover off. Did you look real good and not see the piece you dropped in there? It couldn't have dropped very far.

Did you see this happen or did he tell you it did?
Come to think of it what kind of oil was he using? I don't know of any oil that has a seal between the bottle and cap that could come loose.

You have to explain again what exactly dropped into the oil filler hole and where it came from. And if you haven't started the engine yet you should be able to fish right out.

I just looked at a bottle of my Mobil 1 and there's nothing between the cap and bottle - I guess you Mobil 1 must have been different.
Like I said if you haven't started it you should be able to see right there.

if you want to keep that engine...

I use Mobil 1 and I know what you're talking about. My best guess is that one of two things will happen: 1) It will melt due to the high temperatures and would get stuck to something when you turn the car off and let it cool down. Or 2) It will be pulverized by your valvetrain parts and probably get stuck somewhere. So the result is the same.

Biker's right that this cap won't get down to the cylinders and crankcase, but the valvetrain isn't exactly a great place for it, either. My best advice is to see if you can get some shop (Edit: NOT THE DEALER!) to take off your valve cover to get that thing out, and then get your oil changed again. And tell people who you let change your oil to use a freakin' FUNNEL!

That thing is probably small/light enough that it might have gone in there using a funnel too. The thing is it can't go very far unless you start the engine.

Well then, what Clutch said - and I vote his choice # 2. I don't think it gets hot enough in there to melt that.
Come to think of it if #2 did happen - after a few days you might not find anything under the valve cover - if the pieces got to be small enough they end up in the oil filter eventually.

Ok, I dont understand who was doing your oil change? Where did you take it? Why dont get the guy who dropped it in there to get it out or pay for it to get it out?

that thing is the same size as the cap of mobile 1 oil, but it's alot thinner... it's a screen which they put between the cap and the bottle..

get your oil changed again. Chances are, you'll find it in your filter. If you don't, you won't find it after it has ran a few days, so cross your fingers and hope it doesn't do damage. It takes only a teaspoon of dirt to send a engine to the boneyard.

Unless the thing was pulverized - that's not where you need to look. And no, the oil won't drain out if you want to check the filter, it will stay in the oil pan.

Like I said that's not the place to look for big pieces. If the pieces are big enough they are still under the valve cover. If they are small enough that they are in the filter you'll want to change it with a new one (and you won't see them in the filter).

You from Toronto?? What garage did you go to?? Do you always take your car there for an oil change?? How could they let some 'alarm guy' do an oil change on your car??
Do you know him or did he offer to do an oil change??

The garage is responsible... you shouldn't be worried about something like this... you pay them $$$ for service, not to fxxk up your car.

Funny, my buddy took his car (Mazda6) to the dealer for an oil change. They did fine with the removing the oil part, but...I'm sure you know what's coming here. Couple hundred feet outside the dealer, driving back to work, it became apparent that they weren't so diligent with the refilling the oil part.

Granted, the topic of this thread is unfortunate, but I'll still take my chance doing my own light maintenance, only because I think I have more invested in the results of it, and my top priority isn't doing it fast.

Go have someone look at it for you. If you don't know much about it, you probably shouldnt mess with everything yourself. The sooner the better just so you don't have to worry.

BTW, i think its funny that your name is shitbox, but you make a point not to use the word shit when you're typing your posts.

And if your dealer does a mistake (which happens, one must admit), they will usually cover it in a hurry once shown evidence of it, and take care of repairing the situation.

Which obviously wouldn't happen if you do the same mistake.
