New Car Question about Issues...please help

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and have a a couple of questions. I have an 05 CG TSX that's a week old.

When you first press on the gas, do you guys feel a slight vibration in the car? Also, do you guys feel a vibration on the steering wheel when the car is idle or stopped with the gear in drive?

Also, do you hear a sort of clicking/ticking sound in the engine? I especially hear it when the car is in drive and I have my foot on the break.

Are these things normal?

thanks in advance

Congrats on the CG TSX. A twin to mine.

No, no no no no. Take it immediately to have the dealer have a look at it. The whole car should be smooth like a baby's butt.

I'm not a car expert by any means, but are you using at least Medium grade gas? Maybe you accidentally put in regular gas and it's messing up. Car experts, help me out with that one.

Another thing is that in the first 600 miles you're supposed to not go over like 60 mph or break really hard so you train the engine and help out it's timing. Then you can gradually start adding more speed to not crap out the engine.

Again, not a car expert, but that's been my experience and i'm sticking to it.

Thanks TSXMike05,

I've been using 93 octane gasoline. I've been real careful with the engine and usually top at around 60-70mph. The techs at my dealer told me it's ok to approach 70 mph just as long as I don't go crazy with the acceleration. I almost never go over 3000 rpm's. Any more ideas? I called the dealer today and I'll be bringing in my car tomorrow.

thanks

First, congratulations on your new car. We just bought ours 2 days ago.

I drive a 6-speed and I don't feel any unusual vibration in the car. Have you checked your tire pressures?

Regarding the ticking sound coming from the engine, maybe that's because your car is 'DA BOMB!!!

Actually, it may be the sound of the timing chain. A salesperson told me that the TSX uses a timing chain which never needs replacement, rather than a timing belt.

Your steering wheels shouldn't shake when you're in idle..

That post is regarding your question about the clicking/ticking sound in the engine. You usually feel it when your car first moves after a cold start and it's normal to hear/feel this.

However, I'm not sure about the vibrations you feel in the car and your steering wheel. I don't notice any abnormal vibrations in idle.

I've noticed vibration if the car is rolling and kept below 1000 rpm. Just rev it a little and it should go away

I get a vibration in the steering wheel during cold starts. The vibration goes away after the engine warms up. I also get this weird tapping sound that comes and goes when i'm idling in "drive". When I shift to neutral it goes away. I'm not sure what it is but it doesn't happen all the time. My car is at the dealership now being looked at. I also have the steering wheel rattle and windshield rattle.

I just got an 05 meteor silver auto/navi four weeks ago. I,ve got 900 miles on it and I have never encountered any of the problems you are discribing. You definitely need to have that thing looked at.

Well, the car has a lot of parts moving around when it's turned on, I know that this causes some vibration (moving parts do that). It is highly subjective, what some people notice others dismiss as normal. Its nearly impossible to diagnose a "noise" or "vibration" form a description on a website.

However, the TSX uses a big 4 cylinder engine, with a pair of balance shafts to smooth things out. All 4 cylinders shake but smaller ones with less reciprocating mass tend to do this less. What are you coming from? If it's from a V-6 the TSX will probably vibrate more. If from a Civic, the TSX will probably vibrate more. This is more noticable at low RPM and very noticable when in gear at a stop. IMO normal, FWIW, my 2005 S2000 vibrates more than my old 2001 with the smaller engine.

Colin,

Thanks for your reply. I know it's no comparison, but I'm coming from an old 91 Accord. So are you saying it's normal for my TSX to have some sort of vibration (even a smal one) at any gear? I feel it with my hands on the wheel a little bit. I guess that's normal...right? Does your TSX act like that? As you've stated, I notice it the most when the gear is set on drive and I'm on a stop. You can hear the car vibrate a little bit. It sounds like a typical 4 cylinder in cold weather. The vibration, however, improves as the car warms up.

This is my first brand new car, so I guess maybe I'm being waaaaay to anaytical with the car. I probably need to stop trying to tune into every sound the car makes.

I went to the dealer this morning and they said it's normal. I even drove a loaner car, which was a 04 TSX with 13000 miles, and it pretty much behaved the same way. They also told me that since I only have about 600 miles, I'll settle into the car more as it breaks in.

I have 05 meteor silver auto no nav. Has about 600 mile on it, and has no vibration or any sort when idiling or driving. I do have the same problem with the clicking/ticking sound in the engine from a cold start. I took it to the dealership yesterday 03/21/05, and they told me that the tranny should not make that noise. I will post the out come of this and let you guys know.

That sounds fishy to me that the car vibrates. I have an 05 TSX 5AT and it doesn't have any vibration at all.

I'm not a car expert by anymeans, but it doesn't sound right that it vibrates and the dealer says it's normal.

If I were you, i'd call up another Acura dealership in your area and just ask the service dept there. See what they say.

Good luck

gsxterboy, that was part of the point of my post. In every automatic tranny car, when you come to a stop in gear, the car must push against the torque converter. This changes the vibration charactoristics of the engine/transmission. This is why it wants to creep forward slightly. When you put it in park or neutral, the frequency changes, same when you take your foot off the brake and start to go. If you have an automatic, I'm sure your car does this. What I was trying to say is that some people are sensative to this and other aren't. This is not a flame, just pointing our how "impercise" our language can be at times, especially when trying to describe things like this. How do you describe (in writing) the sound of a dog barking to someone who has never seen a dog?

Same here... If others are experiencing this, as quite a few on this site are, then it's gotta be somewhat normal. Colin raised a good point. Some people may not notice it because they are not sensitive to it or they think it's normal. I find myself being very sensitive to the car, which is why I found it to be a big deal.

I called another dealer service dept. and they said some vibration is normal. He said there's no reason for alarn now since I only have 700 miles on it. The guy told me to drive it until about 1500 miles and see. According to him, the engine should get smoother as it breaks in, but if it gets worse, then I have to bring it in.

Man this sucks. The dealer told me that they didn't hear the ticking/tapping sound on their test drive so nothing was done.

With the windshield rattle, nothing was fixed because they didn't hear anything. They just lubricated the sunroof area. (I suspect it was too warm)

With the steering wheel rattle, they say the rattling is due to the design. They opened the steering wheel up and repositioned the wires. They claim it doesn't rattle/buzz anymore. I will have to check it out.

With the brake pedal low hissing/squeeling sound, nothing was done because they didn't hear anything. (This has been happening since I took delivery of the car)

With gaps in bodykit install, nothing was done. Service manager took a look at it and claims everything was installed correctly. If I have any issues, I should take it up with him.

Ticking/tapping - nothing was done

steering wheel rattle - reposition wires
brake pedal hiss/squeal - nothing was done

This dealer sucks. You need to find another one.

i second that motion. I'm about to see my dealer for something totally unrelated (swirly scratches, which i expect I'll get the brush off)

I wonder if there is a website or something where we can rate dealers? Hmmm, why not open a new thread?

Before you open a new thread, do a search. I'm pretty sure there was one started about people's experience with various dealers.
